We recently connected with Megan Grass and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I have “started” my photography business a few times and each time I started I was not in the right place to start it. I wanted it to be my career rather than a passion that supplemented other income. If I had chosen to put 100% of my time and energy into the business then the first time I “started” back in 2014 would have been the perfect time. Photography was still something people enjoyed hiring someone to do, it has however gotten increasingly more difficult as smart phone cameras, editing apps and software get more and more widely available.
I started my digital media management and marketing business at the beginning of 2022 and it took a year to really take off into what it is today and there are still miles and miles to go. That said I think that I started it at a great time, digital media marketing are key parts of how companies promote their products and services. It is virtually impossible to market anything without social media which is an ever evolving entity that is unlikely to lose momentum.
Megan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Something that I like to call Mental Health Photography is my current focus within my photography. Being human is hard and the world we live in does not make it any easier. Many people suffer from mental health issues and have to deal with the stigma of that everyday. My goal with this photography style is to create a safe space for someone to feel as confident as possible. For example, someone with Body Dysmorphia has a hard time being confident, so I ask my clients what is it that makes you feel your best and whatever that is, that is what I photograph. When they need that confidence boost sometime down the road they can refer to the photos and remember just how wonderful they are.
When I decided to rebrand my existing photography business, I chose to open it up to categories that fall in line with what I love to do, to make my clients feel as amazing as possible. I have photographed weddings, events, couples, landscapes etc. but my true passion is making people feel confident so I shifted my focus to my Mental Health Photography & Boudoir.
Ostentus Digital Media Management
My most recent venture has been a long time in the making, it has been many other things and has been structured in multiple ways.
In Latin Ostentus means “to display” and that is exactly what I do. I display whatever product or service that my clients have to offer. Primarily through social media. I take over the posting on these pages to take the burden off the client who has other business decisions to make. I take the creatives and the marketing plans and implement them in the best way possible based on the social media platform they are being posted on.
Neither of these businesses are easy, they require constant adaptations to fit the world around us but with that comes great lessons and fun. I enjoy the chaotic nature of these types of businesses because what is life if not chaotic?
If the world needs to know anything about my brand, it would be that it is authentic and unwavering.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the many lessons that I had to unlearn was, just because I am a new business does not mean that I should undervalue my skills.
When starting a business there are two traps that people tend to fall into, charging too much to make up for the cost of start up or charging too little because they do no think they can charge too much in the beginning. I fell into the later trap and did not want to over charge because I was starting out, it took me awhile to realize that I will never make a profit or grow my business if I do not have confidence in myself or the services that I offer.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is key when deciding to start a business. Creating something from the ground up is never easy and resilience and adaptation are the two pillars that anyone who wants to build something successful stand on. It is late nights, missed weekends and for me personally A LOT of coffee. Every profit made and every happy client makes the hard work and resilience that much more rewarding.
