We were lucky to catch up with Jenny Sanchez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jenny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
My defining moment came because of what didn’t happen…
I felt like I was doing everything right – I was eating the kale and doing the yoga – in fact, I owned the yoga studio – but my stress level and ability to enjoy life left much to be desired. I always thought it was due to the fact that my life was in fact extremely stressful. Just after opening my first yoga studio, my dad went into the hospital for dehydration and never came out. He was diagnosed with advanced dementia and overnight I became a caretaker. My mom died a few years earlier so that left me. When I wasn’t at the studio, I spent most of my time in hospitals, nursing facilities, and rehab centers. It was very difficult and beyond stressful and it went on for almost 10 years.
But I was eating healthy, exercising, and doing tons of yoga so I figured when my dad was finally released from his suffering, I would be too. I really believed I was taking care of myself, healing my stress one yoga class at a time but a year after my dad passed away and I was still a total stress ball, and enjoying my days felt so far out of reach I started to question what was missing…and I began a simple, daily meditation practice designed to heal stress and give the body a rest that’s 5x deeper than sleep.
And it changed everything.
I felt lighter, way less stressed, and my anxiety level dropped significantly. I was finally able to think clearly and not get so caught up in my emotions and thoughts – there was space for me to feel good.
Meditation made such a dramatic impact on my well-being that I knew I had to teach it. I knew I had to share what had been so incredibly transformational for me.
I still practice yoga daily and teaching yoga remains to be one of my most favorite things to do, but I have poured my energy into learning and practicing as much as I can about meditation so that I can help other stressed-out, anxious, exhausted people feel better, stress less, and enjoy more.
I’ve taught countless meditation workshops, one on one meditation classes, developed an online meditation course, and incorporated daily meditation into the retreats I host in Patagonia Argentina.
Meditation completely changed me and became the defining element that reshaped my career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My mom was a fitness instructor so I grew up in the wellness industry. When I was 18 I began teaching classes, in 2011 I opened my first yoga studio and in 2018 I began teaching meditation.
I have always been passionate about practicing and teaching both yoga and meditation in a way that feels doable, relatable, and simple. Our lives are so hectic and stressful, we don’t have the time or patience for vague flowers-and rainbow concepts – if we want to take control of how we feel, think, and relate to our lives we need tools that not only actually work but don’t feel ridiculous doing them.
I offer meditation tools and techniques to help people get out from under all their stress, overwhelm, and exhaustion. – because once you feel better, you can begin to live better.
I think what sets me apart in the wellness industry is that I don’t teach anything that I don’t practice. I practice yoga and meditation daily so I know firsthand how difficult it can be and I can offer a helping hand in making it easier. I drink wine, eat chocolate, and put cream and sugar in my morning coffee because those things bring me joy and I believe the key to sticking with habits that will truly transform your life – like meditation – is to be real about designing the practice to fit your life. That’s what I can help my students do.
I have an online course called Practically Meditating where you can learn how to meditate in a way that feels good to you. In that course, I also open up my entire personal “toolbox” of habits and practices that have made dramatic shifts in my life and teach you how to incorporate them into yours.
I also host retreats in Patagonia Argentina where you can learn those same transformational skills while exploring the Andes Mountains, eating incredible food, and drinking great beer and wine!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think even more than taking a training, practicing is essential for becoming a good yoga or meditation instructor. I also believe you’ve got to fully understand that what may come easy for you can be extremely difficult for your students and your true job is to bridge that gap. If you are fully present with your students you learn more from them than they probably learn from you and so your mission becomes mirroring those lessons back to them in a way they understand and feel comfortable with.
Always practice what you preach. Always.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being myself. That has always been what has made me successful in my business. I’m not the perfect yogi and I’m honest about that which opens a door for people who may feel like yoga or meditation is “for other people”.
I don’t attract the ultra-vegan, chanting, journaling clients because that’s not me. Coming from a place of authenticity and being comfortable with the way you share your knowledge is key to getting people to want to work with you. Sharing in the experience, not just “teaching” is what makes the magic happen and leaves people walking away feeling empowered and confident.
