We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sinki Huang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sinki below.
Alright, Sinki thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
During my journey with FILA CHINA as a graphic and pattern designer, one of the kindest things ever done for me was the unwavering support and guidance I received from my boss and colleagues. This experience holds a special place in my heart due to its significance in shaping my professional path and bolstering my confidence.
I began my venture into the world of design as a career shifter, transitioning from a background in tourism management. Despite this unconventional route, my boss and colleagues embraced me with open arms. They didn’t focus on the fact that I was entering the field from a different discipline; instead, they were genuinely interested in nurturing my growth.
Every day, I found myself seeking advice from my fellow pattern and graphic designers, as well as my mentor. What struck me the most was their willingness to dedicate time and effort to answering my questions. They patiently guided me through various challenges, offering insights that went beyond the technical aspects. Their support wasn’t just about helping me complete tasks; it was about empowering me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel.
Their mentorship was truly transformative. I recall facing a steep learning curve when it came to Adobe Illustrator. While I had a foundation in Photoshop, Illustrator was a new terrain. Thanks to their guidance, I gained proficiency in Illustrator in a remarkably short span. Their expertise became my foundation, enabling me to contribute effectively to projects.
One standout moment in my journey was the “VOYAGE” clothing collection. This project not only showcased my growth but also emphasized the collaborative spirit within the team. I was entrusted with leading the graphic design part of the collection, a responsibility that signified their belief in my capabilities. Their faith in me inspired me to infuse my creativity into the project. The collection ultimately graced the Milan Fashion Week runway and garnered significant attention, even landing among the top three best-selling collections of the season.
This experience was a testament to the power of mentorship and support in fostering growth. Their kindness went beyond answering my queries; it was about building a nurturing environment where I could thrive despite my unconventional background. Their guidance shaped not only my design skills but also my confidence in taking on challenges that initially seemed insurmountable.
Looking back, I’m filled with gratitude for their patience, guidance, and unwavering belief in me. Their kindness not only enabled my professional success but also underscored the importance of lifting others up in their pursuit of excellence. This experience serves as a reminder of the impact we can have on each other’s lives and careers through mentorship and support.

Sinki, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
1) About My Journey and Industry Entry:
Currently, I hold roles as a graphic designer and Chinese social media manager at Reed Art Department, a dynamic creative and marketing agency, as well as Staple Pigeon, a globally recognized streetwear brand based in the heart of New York City. Additionally, I thrive as a freelance illustrator and photographer, which allows me to explore a diverse range of artistic avenues.
My trajectory into the world of art is an unconventional one. Although I lacked formal artistic training, my penchant for drawing dates back to my earliest memories. Perhaps it’s a trait I inherited, inspired by my father’s architectural pursuits that ignited my fascination with sketches and lines.
Originally pursuing a degree in Tourism Management at Beijing Forestry University, my path took a transformative turn. Guided by an intrinsic longing for creative expression, I embarked on a transition to study Illustration at the esteemed Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) for my graduate degree. This metamorphosis marked a pivotal juncture, defining my aspirations and propelling me toward artistic fulfillment.
2) My Creative Work Spectrum:
In the realm of illustration, my focus gravitates toward editorial and lifestyle genres, complemented by an affinity for surface design. My creations often radiate with vibrant colors, dynamic shapes, and textured layers, facilitating the seamless communication of emotions, fashion, and the essence of existence. My flair for infusing subtle animations into illustrations adds a captivating dimension, magnifying the visual narrative.
Photography is my lens to chronicle human emotions and candid street moments. My lens is drawn to authenticity, capturing the fleeting beauty and narratives embedded in everyday life. From spontaneous street scenes to evocative portraits, my aspiration is to encapsulate the essence of the present and infuse it with emotions and stories.
3) Pride and Distinctiveness:
Amidst the tapestry of my creative journey, I take the utmost pride in my steadfast resolve to embrace my passion and forge ahead on the uncharted paths of my dreams. Unlike those privileged to undergo early formal art training, my evolution has been shaped by an organic, unbridled approach to creativity.
What sets me apart is the freedom my unconventional journey has bestowed upon my work. Free from the constraints of academic conventions, my expressions spring from a rich tapestry of life, nature, and boundless imagination. My artistic philosophy goes beyond replication; it’s about distilling reality into evocative symbols, encapsulating the heart of stories and ideas. Art, for me, transcends the mundane, weaving enchantment into the everyday.
My body of work reverberates with this distinctive essence, engaging audiences with its dynamic vibrancy, multifaceted narratives, and an invitation to experience life through an unfiltered, captivating lens. It’s this essence I wish to share with the world – that art isn’t merely a reflection; it’s a kaleidoscopic portal to emotions, stories, and the limitless vistas of the human experience.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The moment I needed to pivot stands out in my journey as a major turning point – a shift from my original career path to the captivating world of illustration and design. This pivot was driven by a series of eye-opening experiences that reshaped my aspirations and redirected my life’s trajectory.
One pivotal moment occurred during my junior year, during a field trip to prestigious hotels like Hilton and Ritz-Carlton as part of my tourism management studies. Observing the day-to-day routines within these establishments, I couldn’t shake the feeling that a career solely focused on ascending the ranks within the hospitality industry would be far too monotonous. The prospect of progressing from a waiter to a front desk manager, and eventually to a store manager, left me seeking something more vibrant and meaningful. It was this very realization that kindled the idea of pivoting towards a creative domain like design.
The initial spark, however, came from my childhood fascination with drawing. Influenced by my architect father, I was exposed to the world of sketches and blueprints at a tender age. My participation in various drawing competitions during my school years, coupled with recognition on a national level, further ignited my passion for artistic expression.
Another decisive factor was an internship during my freshman and sophomore year at Peerbridge University (former Unisity Education & Technology Co., Ltd.), where I worked as a graphic designer. Here, I dabbled in graphic design for marketing and branding, unearthing my latent love for the art. Amidst the myriad design possibilities, I found myself drawn to the enchanting realm of illustration. As a junior, I seized opportunities to work as both an illustrator and graphic designer at Beijing Silkroad & Sun Cultural Company, crafting brochures, postcards, and innovative art derivatives. These experiences honed my skills in picture composition, color harmonization, and the intricacies of visual storytelling. This exposure solidified my conviction that illustration was my true calling, steering me towards pursuing advanced studies in this creative field abroad.
The pivot wasn’t solely about changing academic paths; it was about embracing my passion and embarking on a journey that resonated with the core of my being. This shift illuminated a path where creativity and fulfillment intertwine, ultimately leading me to a career that I’m genuinely passionate about.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the unbridled ability to forge my own distinctive path each day. This process infuses a profound sense of purpose into my life, granting me the unique privilege of translating my imagination into tangible forms. This stark contrast to a routine of monotonous and repetitive tasks is what empowers me, allowing my existence to be enriched with the hues of creativity.
Engaging in work that is not only fulfilling but also purposeful is paramount to me. After all, our professions often walk alongside us for the majority of our lives. Crafting something I am genuinely passionate about not only lends significance to my daily endeavors but serves as a testament to my quest for meaning in life itself. This pursuit is what shapes my creative journey, allowing my chosen profession to be an ongoing reflection of my true self.
Furthermore, witnessing the resonance my creations strike within others is immensely gratifying. It’s like an uplifting cycle of inspiration – the more my works are cherished, the more motivated and confident I become to delve into even greater depths of imagination. The warmth of appreciation becomes the wind beneath my wings, propelling me to push my boundaries, explore novel mediums, and consistently surpass my own artistic horizons.
The heartwarming feedback from those who connect with my art reaffirms that I’m on the right path, validating the choices I’ve made and the dedication I’ve poured into my craft. It’s in these moments that I feel truly alive, a sense of joy that echoes in each stroke of my brush or click of my camera. The journey of an artist is not solely about personal expression; it’s about touching hearts, resonating with souls, and leaving an indelible mark on the world around us. And for me, that’s the most rewarding aspect – being part of a legacy that inspires, uplifts, and transcends time.
