We recently connected with Nathaniel Denson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathaniel, thanks for joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I had to start my web design gig all over again, one thing I’d definitely change is bringing in top-notch professional help way earlier in the game. You know, like those experts who really know their stuff – the kind that can take my business to the next level. Scaling up, it turns out, is all about having a rock-solid team. I used to think I could do it all on my own, but having the right people on board makes a world of difference. So yeah, I’d say investing in quality help from the get-go would’ve saved me some headaches and probably boosted my business faster than I could’ve imagined.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So, my journey into this web design world began back when I was studying computer science at the University of Florida. After getting my degree, I had some sweet job offers down south, but honestly, I wasn’t too keen on moving. Then, fate stepped in, and I got linked up with a group of college students who were kickstarting their own web design venture. I jumped on board, soaking up everything I could from those savvy students. Fast forward a bit, their business unfortunately hit a rough patch and had to close shop. But hey, I wasn’t about to let that stop me. I took the skills I had honed and hit the ground running on my own.
Initially, I was all about web design, crafting those sleek and eye-catching sites. But you know what they say – follow the green, and that led me to exploring the marketing side of things. It didn’t take long to figure out that the marketing game was where the real bucks were rolling in. So, I made a smooth transition from focusing solely on design to diving headfirst into the lucrative world of marketing. And let me tell ya, that move has paid off big time!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot when the whole world went topsy-turvy when COVID hit, and business as usual? Well, that went right out the window. But I’m no quitter, and I knew I had to pivot to keep the ship sailing. So, what did I do? I went all in on creating multiple streams of income that were a bit more chill and passive. Instead of just relying on the monthly grind of client SEO work, I shifted my focus to building personal websites that soared up those search engine ranks.
Investing my time in crafting these high-ranking personal sites, I was basically creating assets that had serious monetizing potential. It was like planting seeds that would keep on giving. And you know what? It paid off big time. This pivot not only kept the cash flowing during the uncertainty of the pandemic but also set me up with a more stable and diversified income source. So yeah, I turned a challenging situation into a golden opportunity, and I’m darn proud of it!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to learn the hard way was when I was scaling up my business. Everything was looking great, and the money was flowing in like nobody’s business. But here’s where I messed up big time – I didn’t think much about those pesky taxes.
So, I skipped the whole CPA deal, thinking I could handle it all on my own. I figured all that money coming in was basically mine to do with as I pleased. Well, guess what? Reality slapped me hard with a hefty tax bill that I hadn’t seen coming. It hit me like a ton of bricks, and suddenly, I was stuck playing catch-up for the next few years, trying to make things right with the tax folks.
Lesson learned. Turns out, paying taxes is just one of those non-negotiable things in business, no matter how fast you’re scaling. So, if there’s one thing I could go back and unlearn, it’d be that misconception that all the money was mine to keep. Trust me, it’s better to pay the taxes on time and avoid the late fees and interest.
