We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luis E. Alexander a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luis E. , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I have multiple projects I tend to work on. I usually do two long term projects a year that take 6-8 months. These are my most meaningful to me because I give them most of my time and thoughts,I usually will have multiple reference images that I use to create a new composition unique to me, I take my time with layout, color composition, and general eye appeal. I like to create something new that has never been represented and viewed before. These long projects are my babies, which is why they are the most meaningful to me. In between these projects I will fill the time with 3- 5, one month projects and a bunch of sketches and concept drawings for the next big project.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey, well my name is Luis E. Alexander, most people know me as Alex. I’ve been making art since I can remember. I have always felt lost with out art, it’s something that I’m very connected with. I’ve been working in the oilfield industry for the last 12-14 years, supporting my family, and I make my art on the side, it’s mainly for me. I recently decided to make the switch. I left the oilfield, got a locally based part-time job, and started an apprenticeship in a tattoo studio based in SW Houston. This is a new endeavor for me, so wish me luck. I soon will be offering prints of current artworks, and will continue to make new art, it’s going to be awhile before I’m making appointments, lol. But I hope to hear from y’all in the future. Thanks for all the support to my art fans, your support helped me get through those art blocks.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I don’t have a huge large fan base, but this is my second account. I had my account @datboij0k3r hacked, and loss, about two years ago. I think I only had like 5k followers , but I was just starting to get momentum and engagement. It was a blow to the gut, knocked the creative wind out of me. But I remembered why I started my account in the first place, it wasn’t for engagement. It was so I would be motivated to create art on a regular basis. So I picked my self up and started again, I think I’m at 3k followers now, and I’m thankful to them all, they seem real, and genuine.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Finishing!! Finally completing the art piece. Because when I’m making art, that image, or idea is always in my mind. I’m visualizing, imagining, or tweaking the image in my mind. Successfully relaying to canvas or paper the image that’s been living in my head for weeks, or month is so satisfying.
