We were lucky to catch up with Love Keyyz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Love Keyyz, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’ve always wanted to talk about this but people don’t understand me. I’ve been a creative since I was a teen so I don’t really know what a regular life is like. I was very independent at a young age, so my priorities were always different. I’m constantly planning and strategizing on a daily basis and it has become second nature. For example, I never indulged in simple pleasures like movie nights, being lazy, or window shopping. I felt like I always had to sacrifice and put my career and image first. I took life too serious and it made me anxious.
However, while I always wonder what life would be if I had a regular career, I am very happy as an artist. I wake up every day and do what I love in one of the biggest cities in the US. I created my own destiny and while it can be extremely difficult, I could leave this world today knowing that I spent my entire life choosing ME. I have lived a very authentic life and my music reflects that. I am blessed beyond measure because most people will never get the same chances. Dream chasing is hard, I’d consider it a luxury.
Love Keyyz, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey in music started on YouTube around 2010. I sang as a hobby, but the support I garnered turned it into a career I didn’t know I was destined for all along. At around age 16, I started writing my own songs and releasing my own music. I spent a lot of time at a studio called Timeless Recording Studio, watching the pros and learning how to craft music. They worked hands on with me to help me find my sound. Around that time, I also started teaching myself piano on YouTube. This is when I realized that I’m not just an artist, but a musician.
I would say I was a “viral sensation” at the time, frequently getting thousand of views on YouTube and being recognized by celebrities whose songs I covered. This inspired me to move to Los Angeles because I had a big buzz online and throughout my hometown Cincinnati. I moved to LA in 2018 with no plans and while it started off rough, my life has changed completely.
Since moving to LA, I realized the importance of being well-versed in your passion. Being self-taught was great, but music makers are forever students. This inspired me to take music lessons, which turned into me completing an Associate’s in Music, being the first college graduate in my family. It didn’t end here, as I moved on to the University of Southern California with a full ride to receive my bachelor’s.
Some of the things I’m most proud of are both of my projects that charted on Apple Music’s R&B Top 200, making me a 2x charting artist. Still a viral sensation, I have over 50,000 followers cross all platforms with most coming from my viral TikTok’s. I’ve written for many major artists, tv shows, and have done 2 Songwriter Hall of Fame tributes. I’ve worked closely with legend Patrice Rushen on my piano skills and also play many more instruments including the harp. I may be 10 years in this work, but things are just getting started.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is when you realize the impact your art has on not just yourself, but other people. It’s sort of mind-boggling to me when people say I made them cry or that my music got them through something. We get caught up in numbers but impact is much more important. I have impacted lives and that’s what this life is about. You don’t have to be a doctor or therapist to heal people. Impact comes in many ways.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My career wouldn’t exist without social media. I started in 2010, back when YouTube was the most used platform and not many people knew how to brand themselves. It’s 2023 now, and everything is oversaturated so the game is a bit different. The best advice I can give is to be CONSISTENT. Be consistent in your brand, in your frequency of posting, and in your content. Consistency is the only way to gather attention. Don’t worry about numbers. Focus on impact and how you want to display yourself. And please note, you do NOT have to wait until you have the perfect camera, perfect idea, etc.
Find ways to make your content relevant. For example, if you are a singer, do covers of popular songs because people are searching for them the most. If you are a stylist, dress up to trending songs and themes. There are many ways to jump on trends without seeming disingenuous. People will catch on eventually, but you have to put in a lot of work in the beginning.
Don’t be afraid to invest in self. Don’t be afraid to pay for ads, influencers, or flyers. Nobody will promote you like you. You have to get out in front of the world, past the limits of your followers. You are a business at the end of the day. Constantly make plans and try new things.
