Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cynthia Vivar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cynthia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
Any change that I would like to see in the educational system is what I strive to provide as an educator myself. I am a believer in providing solutions and being the change that I wish to see in any aspect of my life, especially the educational realm. For years, many people have criticized the educational system and especially their School Counselors for not being supportive, or caring, or invested in their students. However, I was lucky to have the opposite experience- my school counselor inspired me to achieve academic and post-secondary success. This led me to become motivated academically, and inspired me to pay that motivating energy forward to the younger generations.
One thing that I do wish all students were required to learn as a requisite to earn a high school diploma is digital citizenship. Today’s students are required and expected to know how to send an email and how to comment on a social media post, but this exact thing is what school districts across the country are not requiring students to learn. Many students are still either not technologically literate, or not digitally conscious if they are- leading to an outbreak of cyberbullying as well as low self esteem-inducing social media comparisons. My solution is to therefore, in my practice as a School Counselor, aim to develop my students holistically- academically, socio-emotionally, and college/career-wise. I take great pride and am humbled in the fact that as Educators, we have the capacity to impact our future generations for the better, one student at a time. I would like to let it be known that Educators in schools- of all grade levels- work extremely hard every day, sometimes almost all day because such is our heart- and we make the world a better place because of it. The children are our future, and what we teach them today will be what they manifest tomorrow.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I believe in helping others foster their own success- whether this be in the school setting or in the world of Real Estate. As a School Counselor, I am motivated by my student’s academic accomplishments and character growth. As a Realtor, my mission is to help people achieve their American Dream by owning real property and consequently, uplift communities.
I am a Venice, CA native whose parents migrated from El Salvador. Being from a rural community, my parents did not have the opportunity to ever step foot in a school as a student. My father was a Janitor and my mother used to clean the most beautiful homes in Venice, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Culver City, Brentwood, Palisades, and Malibu. I used to go with my parents to work on the weekends and my days off from school. I saw the differences between communities and hoped to one day be able to help everyone achieve the lifestyle of their dreams. Living these experiences pushed me to become an educated professional and take advantage of the opportunities given to me, as I believe that Education is the path to upward mobility. After earning my graduate degree, I sought out to educate and motivate the younger generations to fulfill their fullest academic potential. Throughout the years, seeing the changes and the trends in the real estate landscape in the own community in which I was born and raised pushed me to earn my California Real Estate license and join one of the most prestigious brokerages in the country. Needless to say, I am glad to be able to serve others in the capacities that I do and thus, leave my mark of goodwill in the communities of Los Angeles.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
If you were to speak to any of my past clients, they would all say that I go above and beyond to make sure that their homebuying or homeleasing experience is a smooth one. My motto is “Su Casa es Mi Casa”, a word-play on the old adage “My home is your home”- but instead, meaning “Your Home is My Home”, because the care that I put in each and every transaction is the same attentiveness and care that I would, and I did put, in my own home-search process.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Staying true to myself and my morale has been the most effective strategy to growing my business. In the world of Real Estate, particularly in a city as diverse yet as divided as Los Angeles, most real estate transactions are about the highest commissions or making sales. However, being that I have my profession as a School Counselor, my purpose for real estate is to enhance communities and help my clients fulfill their homeownership dreams. My clients see this, and this has allowed me to maintain my reputation as a whole-hearted and caring person in this potentially callous business.
