Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Greenberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Scott, thanks for joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
Corporate America excels at operations but struggles with soft skills. These are the human elements of business. Many try to operational these elements or invest in them in ineffective, perfunctory ways. I had a meeting at a hip tech company recently. They had game tables all over the place and a candy buffet. They claimed to value life balance and fun. But what I was told in confidence was that it was a totally toxic culture. Ultimately what matters isn’t what you give people, but how you make them feel.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I help people live and work at a higher level. I’m brought in to keynote conferences, meetings, and gatherings of all kinds of groups looking for motivation and tangible takeaways. I also facilitate leadership and team-building workshops. I focus on the human side of business — how people think, lead, and serve.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I make a living presenting at live events, and 2020 looked to be my busiest year yet. Then COVID came and my entire calendar got cleared, along with all of my income for the foreseeable future. After overcoming the initial shock, I invested in the best equipment I could to deliver presentations online. That positioned me to play an active role in the wave of virtual events that took over the next 18 months. My book came out the same year and I had a launch event that was also streamed. That actually allowed people from all over the country attend and turnout was great. 2020 was a rough year, but 2021 became my best year ever. While live events are back in full swing, I’m now able to offer my clients follow-up webinars. The technology pivot not only got me through the pandemic, but it’s added a new service and revenue stream for my business.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In late 2021 I was diagnosed with throat cancer. That would be scary for anyone. For a public speaker, there’s a whole added layer of fear. I had a different cancer in my 20s when I had a lot less responsibility and maybe a little more energy. Now I had a family relying on me. I also had clients expecting me to keynote their conferences. For a few months during treatment, that just wasn’t possible. But given the type of cancer I had, I had to keep it a secret. Because who would wants to book a speaker who may end up not being able to speak? I came up with some excuses and found some replacement speakers. Treatment was brutal but successful, and I’m now back 100%. I finally revealed what I went through during a TEDx talk I gave in late 2022. Like so many other experiences I had, I’ve turned this one into a message I use to help my audiences.
