Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nate Furtado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nate, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How do you think about cost-management? Growing a business is always exciting, but often businesses run into issues when costs grow faster than revenue – have you experienced such an episode? Any advice for other operators around how to keep costs in line?
It is easy to believe a plugin or piece of gear will instantly improve work quality. As a budding engineer, I was drawn toward the newest plugin. I sprinted towards the unreachable finish line. Of the plugins I invested in I currently use less than half. The remnants are deadweight but I maintain them in order to recall sessions for past clients. Less is more, especially in the beginning. If asked how I would approach it differently, I would acquire a dozen versatile tools both colorful and transparent. Save the capital to invest elsewhere or to float your operation for the months when work is light. Those days come for every entrepreneur everywhere.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The music industry made sense. Music has always been meaningful to me. I learned the alto sax at age 9. Fell in love with bass guitar at age 15. I toured domestically and internationally with the American Christian rock band Citizens from 2011-2021 and finished an undergraduate degree somewhere in the middle.
I met creators from all paths on the road. We each shared a commonality. All had worked for or hired someone who did not care. That is what makes me unique; the care I take with all. It is imperative for me I understand and support the client’s direction for their art.
I have two client categories. Bands and Artists. Composers and Directors. I work both in production and post-production. The former often hire me as a general contractor for their recording and production.
Having my hands in both worlds creates creative cross-pollination. Currently, I have a platinum single in 9 countries. Mixed film scores for major and indie film titles; garnered some nominations and a few wins. Charted a few billboards and was entrusted by companies such as Apple, Amazon, and Louis Vuitton.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
My introduction to film scores required risk. I had minimal experience and sent a cold text to a composer offering production and post-production services outside what I was known for. He thanked me for reaching out. I did not hear anything until a year later. He asked if I could produce, engineer, and mix a feature-length documentary. I gambled on myself and said I could. I still work with this composer today and consider him one of my close friends.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth has been the catalyst of change for growth. How clients speak about our experience working together ripples further than any social media marketing push I could fund.
