Ryan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
My customer base has grown significantly over the last year and I am truly grateful. I show my customers appreciation by featuring them on my Instagram page, providing them with VIP discount codes, and by forming personal connections with many of them….even the ones I’ve never met in person. No business can be successful without the support of others, so I am truly thankful for all my loyal customers.
Ryan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ryan Brown and I am the owner of TAB Boutique. TAB Boutique is an online boutique that specializes in statement accessories such as earrings, handbags, sunglasses, and hats. When I started TAB in July 2019, it began an online boutique for plus size women. However in 2020 it transitioned into an accessories boutique for ALL women. I am extremely proud of TAB’s growth and my personal growth as a business owner. This journey has been filled with many trials and errors, but it has been worth it. Being a business owner and a full time middle school teacher is no easy task, but I am committed to do my best in both positions.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When TAB Boutique launched, it was catered to plus size women who liked trendy clothing. However, just like many businesses, we struggled in our first year. I’d invested a lot of money on clothing for spring/summer and those clothes did not sell as easily as I thought they would. Unfortunately, when it was time to invest in fall/winter clothing, the boutique had not made enough money to get the styles I desired. As a first time business owner, I became extremely discouraged and wanted to quit. However, I decided to go in a different direction and add accessories to the site. Investing in accessories was more affordable than clothing and once I added accessories to the website, they began to sell immediately. Switching my focus from clothing to accessories was the best move I could make for TAB and it has shown great success.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy I have used in growing my audience is being consistent in posting and being personable, available, and relatable to my audience/customers. When customers trust you and your brand, they share your posts and refer your business to their friends and family. I have really cool relationships with so many of my customers of whom I never met. Many of my customers feel comfortable enough to message me with any questions or concerns and I’m always quick to respond. Tik Toks and Reels have also allowed great exposure to people who didn’t previously follow you.
