We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bertha Osorio-Campbell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bertha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The biggest risk I took was purchasing a 200K laser machine in the middle of a pandemic before I even had an office to place it in. Yup, you read that right I had a laser device delivered to my house at the end of 2020 and it was that decision that lighted the fire under my ass to find a commercial property.
I had just returned from a conference that I received a free ticket to and was so inspired by all the success stories. I decided to entertain the idea of buying a laser machine and an inquiry into finance options led me to signing the deal a couple weeks later.
The anxiety after I signed it was REAL! I didn’t even have a location to use this thing. But it was at that moment that everything changed for me and how it brought me to where I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know about me I’d like to start out by doing a quick 6 degrees of separation where I will share 6 facts about myself. It goes a little something like this. If you knew you you’d know that I was born in Nicaragua and came to this country at 4 years old. I have a 20 year old son and a brand new 3 week baby girl who I chose to give birth as a solo mom by choice. I love giving back and serving those in need. My first ever profession was being a middle school teacher in the hood of Liberty City Miami. I absolutely love soca music and I am an advocate for special needs children.
Now that you know me a little more personal let me tell you how I began my journey as an entrepreneur. There are certain people that will always be natural leaders and just can’t work for others and I am one of them. I always knew I wanted my own practice from I was in school. I actually started my business while still in school getting my masters in nursing.
After graduation I practiced in the field of functional medicine as I could never practice traditional medicine. Functional medicine looks for the root cause of the dis-ease and addresses the whole person. Aesthetics chose me as I hated it at first. After getting laid of in January of 2020 I decided I was going to trust myself enough to go on my own.
Well then the pandemic hit and well I was the mobile Covid practitioner. I was in people homes testing them and giving them IV hydration for their immunity to prevent them from ever needed to be hospitalized. I tested over 250 people and treated Covid positive patients in their home. This was the premise and start of my practice.
Once the world began to open up I started adding more services like bloodwork, Botox, fillers and prp hair restoration and microneedling. I did this mobile for a while and in September 2020 began renting out two days a week from my esthetician. Then in December I purchased my laser as you now know and by March 2021 moved into my commercial property and have not looked back since.
I love that I have the freedom to care for my patients the way I want and not being constrained to a system where making money is the main priority. I am a unique practitioner in that I not only specialize in functional medicine but also aesthetics and there are not many of us in the industry. That is why I don’t call my practice a medspa because I do so much more. A patient truly can get their insides and outsides transformed by me.
I offer a myriad of services from specialized bloodwork and lab analysis to finding the root cause of hormonal imbalances and gut dysfunction. I take a deep dive into anxiety and depression related disorders and help with medical weight loss. I also offer laser hair removal services, body countering services, Injectables and teeth whitening to name a few.
With my services I am able to help my patients find resolutions to issues that traditional medicine just manages with medication. I offer relief and in many cases can reverse their deficiencies. It’s what I am most proud of. It’s very easy to give a pill for the ill because it’s easier and faster. My method takes investigation, major lifestyle changes and time to reverse or improve. Not many practitioners are savvy enough or educated enough to do this. I also serve people of color who in my opinion are the ones most disenfranchised from our broken medical system.
I take what I do with the outmost pride and honor. When you are a patient of mine you are entering into a relationship where we both go on a journey to optimal health.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Grit and resilience and the mindset that I am not giving up. As business owners we go through such a lonely journey and many times no one understands unless they have their own business themselves. I want to give up so many times but it’s my grit and resilience that keeps me moving forward.
The other part of this is building a circle of support from other business owners who can help to build you up when you can’t do it for yourself. This circle is very important to my sanity and it’s what keeps me motivated to continue the journey.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The single most important thing that has helped to build my reputation was my own journey and lifestyle. I have been preaching and teaching this lifestyle since the inception of my business back in 2015. I posted my journey of losing over 160 pounds and how I have maintained the weight loss. I take care of my skin and live a non toxic life.
I am my brand and it’s what makes me reputable.
