We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dexter Griffiths. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dexter below.
Dexter, appreciate you joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
One time I had a client come to me and ask for a whole branding package. Logo, website, branding catalog, etc., and in the beginning, things were going smooth. Unfortunately, they had an unexpected financial hit happen and the work I was doing for them came to an abrupt stop. Three weeks passed by and I reached out to see how they were doing, with no intentions of asking about the resumption of the work I was asked to do, and just to check upon them. I offered a hand in emotional support during that tough time. Out of the kindness of my heart, proceeded to finish building out their brand. After two more weeks of constant work, I decided to personally go to their house and not only see how they were doing but also hand in the work that was promised from the beginning. After I told them that there was no expectation of financial compensation and simply from the bottom of my heart, tears came to their eyes. At the end of the day, business is business, but we’re all human. Every person that comes across me for work is not seen as a “client” but as a friend. The bond that is made from a friendship means more to me than something that is just “work-related” and that’s one thing that I always like to tell people I work with.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since Elementary school, I was in the art program and it was something that I’ve always enjoyed doing. Once I attended Norland Middle School, I was in the magnet art program where my love for the arts expanded, yet I wanted more. So I auditioned, and after getting accepted, went to Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH). Apart from having standard art/painting classes, I was exposed to different forms of design. Product, transportation, illustration, and advertising was where my love for design started. From there I went to Colombus College of Art and Design (CCAD) for industrial design. Since high school, I knew that I wanted to build a foundation on something…I just didn’t know what that “something” was. So after a year in Ohio, I came back to Miami and attended Miami AD School in Wynwood where I studied Art Direction for a year while enhancing my Photography and product development skills. Then it hit me…all the years of art, design, advertising, photography, and working with agencies lead me to realize that I wanted to have my own “BRAND”. I get bored doing the same thing repetitively, so having all I know in a hub that I am in total control of was where my heart was set. And from there…DGriffithsDesign was born…
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It’s always funny to me when I get asked where and how I started my online presence for DGRIFFITHSDESIGN. There was a time when I was huge on using Pinterest for illustrative and design ideas. I created a board for every and anything that I could think of. There came a point where I had 15.8 million people viewing my boards a month, which to me was crazy. Once my website and Instagram were set up for my company, all I did was a post on a board that was all linked to my Instagram and Twitter pages. Before I knew it, hundreds of people started to follow and connect with me for work. Even though my audience on Pinterest isn’t as substantial, there is still a fair amount of people who reach out to me from there as opposed to Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.
I guess if I had to give advice to anyone, mmm…..just be yourself and post what you love and want others to see. We live in a world now where everyone wants to copy this and that person and have this image look like that image. You won’t make it far by being someone else, but you will be known for who YOU are. So project that into either Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, whatever, and your audience will follow you. Trust me.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
100% my character. I consider myself to be a good people person. I come to you as a friend first and we talk business second. That has brought so much word of mouth to what I have built over the years till today. Trust and Respect are two of the biggest things, in my opinion, that matters most for any person. That alone has helped me in the market I’m in now.
