We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joseph Allen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joseph below.
Joseph, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
The main thing that I and all other mobile bike mechanics do, is serve the customer at their home or office. People have busy lives and families have more than one bike. Lugging all of those bikes to a brick and mortar store can be unrealistic. I offer the convenience of having the bike shop come to you. By showing up at your home I build a relationship with you that sometimes is hard to find at your local shop.
Joseph, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started a mobile bicycle repair shop in May of 2020. This was right at the beginning of the lock down when people were stuck at home and being outside offered relief and freedom. Right from the start I was busy with service calls and more than 3 years later I’m busier than ever. I mainly service regular bikes, but since the Summer of 2020, servicing ebikes are becoming a daily occurrence. I also assemble nonelectric and electric bikes each week. I provide fullfillment for close to a dozen bicycle brands which are order online bu consumers.
I also teach bicycle lessons to kids and adults once or twice a month.
I’m very happy to have made the decision to leave the corporate world and pursue my own business. It’s one of the best decisions I have ever made and fixing bikes is the perfect thing for me to do to satisfy my need to solve problems. However, one of the most rewarding experiences in this business is meeting unique people daily and building new friendships through bicycle riding.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I’m a regular Google advertiser. My main source of new clients is through the Google ads that I run. Although, I am now seeing a steady flow of new clients from word of mouth.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Well, BE Cycles is still in its infancy. I have taken out a couple small loans, but securing capital hasn’t really been a thing for me. I am wanting to grow the business and even expand to other parts of the city, so I am now thinking about crowdfunding or something similar. I started the business with what I had and added to it as I went along.
