We recently connected with Kayla Starr and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kayla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I always wanted to be a singer. I’ve been singing since I could talk. High school was when I realized I could actually make this into a career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kayla Starr and I’m a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. I come from a musical family so I’ve been singing my entire life. I started working professionally as a background vocalist in college and it was a ripple effect from there. Being a dancer helped as well, most gigs wanted singers who can follow choreography. That lead me to touring, tv shows and session work with major artists. On top of being a background singer I’ve always made my own music. I’ve released two EP’s, “Salutation” and “Exception to the Rule” both are a mixture of grunge, trip hop and rock. My proudest moment ever was performing in New York and seeing my grandfather in the audience. That meant more to me than anything I’ve ever done. I just released a new single called “Design” and I’m working on my first full length album set to release this fall.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is being able to connect with the audience. I love putting on a good show and contributing to someone’s happiness even if its just for an hr and half. It’s connecting your emotions and letting them know you are there with them to enjoy this moment in time.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support up and coming artists. Check out local shows, buy merch, reshare their music. Do exactly what you would do for a major artist. Be with them in the beginning and ride the journey. I promise you it’s so rewarding to see your favorite artist go from playing local shows to world tours.
