We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madison Grace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madison below.
Madison , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Music has always been a huge part of my life. By the time I was two I was singing in church, it was just something I’ve always done. But I didn’t know it was going to be a career until I saw “Hannah Montana” and realized “oh this is something I could do” I wouldn’t act on it until I was about 10 years old when I started playing guitar, then writing, and performing at local bars, songwriter nights and festivals consistently by that next year.
Madison , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Madison Grace, I’m from a small town in Mississippi (483 people) and I’m a musician. I started singing when I was 2 and by the time I was 10 I was part of the music scene in central Florida, and back home in Mississippi.
Since my parents were divorced I spent equal amount of time growing up in both places, learning different life lessons and honing in on my craft. In Florida I was able to receive a classical music education and play gigs, back home in Mississippi I learned the delta blues and how to feel the music.
Since I started in the early 2010’s the internet really changed the game. I started my social media journey in 2014 but really have used it to its fullest ability until the last 5 years. It’s a full time job in its self to run your own socials on top of creating content and trying to stay on top of trends and create your own. So my philosophy is to just have fun. Keep posting and keep creating. Everything will fall into place. Trust the process!
I’ve been writing music since I can remember but not actually writing full songs until my pre-teens. In a way it’s always been a coping mechanism, wither to escape reality and live in a different story, or help my teenage sisters get through a break up that my adolescent brain couldn’t comprehend but I would ask them “so describe everything your feeling” and I would write it into a song.
Eventually I started writing for my own emotions and experiences. It gave me such peace in a confusing time. It still does.
I hope to create music, art, film, any type of creative medium, that helps others feel at peace and help them process whatever they may be going through.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The other musicians in your local scene. MAKE FRIENDS!! Iron sharpens iron so always be willing to challenge your peers but also SUPPORT each other. Share each others successes and help each other when you fall.
Be a sponge in every situation. Soak up knowledge from veteran musicians and even the new kids on the block. Everyone has something to teach you, whether it’s a blessin’ or a lesson, so, soak. it. up.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I think it should be mandatory for everyone to read “A New Earth : Awakening to your life’s purpose”. By Eckhart Tolle. His ideas and philosophies on “killing the ego” finding your path in life are extraordinary and really eye opening. When I read it I felt like he wrote it for me to me. Truly a great read.
And for my musician friends (or those interested) should read “This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of Human Obsession” by Daniel Levitin. It goes into detail about what happens to our brains while listening and playing music. The physical, chemical, and emotional effects. It’s truly an insane read.
