We recently connected with Sarah Silverman and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
At the end of 2021, after working on the front lines of the Covid pandemic for 1.5 years, I—like many other health care providers—was feeling extremely burned out. My role as a mental health provider in a major hospital center ended up being one of the most challenging times of my career. While helping others navigate the impact of the pandemic on things like mental health, sleep, and social relationships, I wore burnout like a badge of honor, but I knew I had to take a step back from conventional health care after feeling overwhelmed for months. For the first time in a long time, I took some time off and was able to prioritize my own health and happiness. During this break, I felt the nudge to start my own health consulting business and took a leap of faith.
Fast forward a few years later, and now, I get to create an even bigger impact in the world, doing what I love to do: Helping women improve their health and wellness through quality sleep, without the constraints of time-limited appointments, and with the flexibility for me to create better work/life boundaries. Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone, but it’s the best decision I could’ve ever made for myself. This was a huge risk but also a chance for me to step away from a model of care that was no longer serving me or my clients and create a model for healing at the root cause level.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m incredibly passionate about sleep health because of my own personal sleep journey as a natural night owl. I had a huge wake-up call when I suffered from a transient ischemic attack (TIA) at age 24. At the time, I was a full-time graduate student in addition to working two jobs (one being an overnight shift). The doctors concluded that the cause of my TIA was likely due to chronic sleep deprivation (I was sleeping two to three hours/night for months). This health scare heavily influenced my decision to become a behavioral sleep medicine specialist, and I specifically wanted to help women who might be burning the candle at both ends (like I was) learn how to prioritize their sleep. I, unfortunately, had to learn about the importance of getting enough sleep the hard way, and I was determined to solve my own sleep issues without having to resort to using medication.
With less than 800 holistic sleep specialists in the world, I’m one of the very few sleep specialists who helps women improve their sleep by addressing the root cause, instead of resorting to superficial sleep supplements and products. I’m the founder and CEO of Sleep & Shine, a boutique sleep telehealth practice offering personalized and holistic sleep services. I’m also an expert in Cognitive Behavior Therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), the first-line, drug-free treatment for adults with chronic insomnia.
Additionally, I’m the founder and CEO of ZzzHaus (“Sleep House”), a results-driven sleep health consulting agency, which provides concierge holistic wellness coaching and consulting services. As a company focused on women’s sleep and circadian health optimization, the Sleep Haus uses cutting-edge epigenetics testing, circadian science, and evidence-based protocols to maximize performance.
I’m most proud of helping hundreds of women improve their sleep, and thus, their overall quality of life. I believe that every human deserves quality sleep, and I’m on a mission to make science-backed sleep support more accessible to all. Inside my signature online holistic sleep improvement course called The Holistic Sleep Academy™️, I walk my clients through a simplified, step-by-step roadmap to achieving quality sleep without medication.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
1000%. Quality sleep is not a luxury. It’s a basic human need! Sleep is fundamental to overall health and wellness, and there just aren’t enough trained providers in evidence-based sleep support to meet the demand.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Having the training, knowledge, and expertise is important, but I think the most important factor for success is having empathy and holding space for your clients. How you talk to people and how you make them feel is what truly develops a relationship built on trust, and that is what often leads to the best results or health transformation.
I also think it’s important to show how you can help your clients achieve their goals, by showcasing the outcome or results of your offer. Can you help your clients get from point A to B so they can experience their desired outcome? Highlighting the results of your offer is far more important to potential clients, rather than the “what’s included” in your offer.
