We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nichole Biller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nichole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge, in my opinion, would be the amount of Djs in my area. It forces you to be different. To show the clients why you and not them. I believe what sets me apart from other Djs is my big personality and my respect for people.
Nichole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started Biller Entertainment in 2013 with just a few weddings that year. I was working 3 jobs on top of that to make ends meet. After a few years my business grew to over 30 weddings a year and just this past year, over 50. I’ve been given this great opportunity and want to expand. To do that I’ve added a couple of photo booths to my business. I absolutely love what I do and most importantly the people I meet.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
January 1, 2013 was the day that changed my life. It was the day I decided I had enough with they way I was living (or not living). Before that day, and for 10 years, I worked in the restaurant industry as a server and bar tender. I was barely making enough money to survive. At one point I was staying with friends and for awhile I was even living in a hotel. It was awful.
One day my brother came to me with an opportunity to take over his dj equipment and see what I could do with it. That was when I started working part time as a karaoke dj. Before I knew it, I had to quit working as a server and take on djing as a full time job. And in January of 2013, I began working as a wedding dj. That was the pivotal moment in my life and in my career.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The long and the short of it, my personality. My career has been built on word of mouth.
