Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abiodun Koya. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abiodun, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My first dollar and as a creative was in the amount of $500. I was still in my second year of college when I earned this. I remember being elated, and so thrilled that I gushed about it to my senior brother. At that time he looked at me and said oh that’s even nothing compared to what’s coming, compared to what your talents can bring.

Abiodun, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Classical singer (Soprano), poet, entrepreneur and humanitarian. I got introduced to classical music by my dad at a very very tender age before I could speak. At age 6, I was designing dresses for my dolls, writing songs, drawing and just being an interesting kind of all rounder creative. That was when I knew I wanted to be on stage performing.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I express my interest of being on stage on my life to be a performer, my parents had other ideas for my life. They wanted me to become an accountant, but then I hated mathematics so I decided to meet them in the middle by studying business management. Although, later on as an adult, I followed my path of music. But for the most part of my late teens and early 20s, I was in the business of business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In my early adult years by the time I got my feet into singing and performing on stage, I didn’t realize the importance of the deeper spiritual assignment on my hands as an artist. For me then, performing on stage was all about the big beautiful dress I was going to wear, the make up, the kind of hairstyle I would rock, the shoes, the way I should look and be presented. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those things, but the fault was that I got distracted way into the vanity of all that and was completely unfamiliar and ignorant about the true purpose and meaning of becoming an artist. Luckily for me, going through some of life’s experiences and encountering spiritual journeys, put me back in formation. I had to unlearn that to be on stage as a performer is not all about me, or for the selfish reasons I was once into: it is to inspire people, bring joy, hope and succor to all and sundry. Ultimately to touch lives in a unique, rare and special way that only music and it’s ambassadors can.
