We were lucky to catch up with Zoe Everett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zoe, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I have many long term and short term goals with Beauty Boulevard. I want to continue to grow my business in other states with bigger studio spaces and with a team. In addition to that, Beauty Blvd. will be expanding to a training academy where students will get the best permanent makeup & body art training in the area. With that being said, I want my legacy to carry on after I’m gone. I want a team to keep the same drive and passion that I have. I love my business and I look forward to going to work every day. I want people to recognize me when I’m gone as a small town girl with very big dreams. I will always strive to be better and to continue a legacy that I started at the ripe age of 19.
Zoe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2021, I was headed to get permanent makeup done in a surrounding city, when my entire life changed. On the top of Homestake Pass near Butte, my car caught on fire and burned down to the ground. I was panicked and called the permanent makeup artist to tell her what happened. She immediately got in her car to come pick me up to make sure I was safe. I was asked several times whether or not I still wanted to go through with the appt, and I INSISTED on getting my eyebrows done regardless of the situation. During the appt, we were talked about jobs and I told her about the frustrating job I had at the time. Cosmetics always interested me, but I wasn’t passionate about nails, hair, or lashes. I LOVED the concept of permanent makeup and owning a business, so I started asking her questions about her life as a beauty business owner. Shortly after, I took my first permanent makeup class from her. We instantly hit it off and I’m blessed to say that we are still friends to this day. I later took several other classes from her and started my own business at age 20. It’s crazy to think that one tragic event lead to a whole world of opportunities and success.
Owning a business at 20 years old was a strange concept. I could buy a car, but I couldn’t rent one. I could buy a house, but not rent a hotel room. I felt very overqualified for my age so I was very confused on what was appropriate for a 20 year old to be doing. I am now 21 and have overcome situations that I never thought I would face, and have become a stronger person because of it. All the blood, sweat, tears, desire, etc. has paid off, and I am happy to say that I am currently building a legacy.
Fast forward to now, I offer a variety of services including microblading, ombre brows, lip blushing, tiny tattoos, piercings, stretch mark revision, tattoo removal, and tooth gems. I will soon be offering training on piercings and tattoos which I am SO excited for. I have BIG big goals for my business and I know that I will just keep moving forward. One day, I will have several other locations in different states, speak at conferences, expand my training academy, and more.
If there is one thing I would tell someone who is looking at owning a business or getting into the beauty industry is GO FOR IT! Go for it and don’t look back. You are your biggest critic and obstacle. Give it your all and don’t settle. There will always be ups and downs, but at the end of the day if you can say you truly love your job, that’s when you know you’ve won. I am proud to say that I love what I do and I look forward to providing the best innovative body art services in the area.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
After high school, I pursued a degree in business and received my real estate license. I always told myself that real estate was going to be my only job and that I could find success in that industry. Joining real estate in 2020/2021 was tough because of the economy and market situation. I wasn’t making any sales and was spending most of my time at secondary jobs. Shortly after is when I started my Beauty Boulevard business, which quickly became my primary job leaving real estate to be a side hustle. I instantly became more successful and happy in my beauty business and am still growing in the industry. In the future, I would like to balance out both careers and make them both primary sources of income. I love both careers and want to pursue both.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Saying yes to everything was probably the hardest habit to quit. At the beginning of my business journey, I said yes to EVERYTHING which caused a lot of problems. I always thought, “what do I have to lose?”. Turns out you can lose a lot if you don’t know what you are doing or don’t feel comfortable. I have learned that saying no to necessary things is liberating. YOU get the choice of saying yes or no in a situation. I always want to feel comfortable with every decision I make within my business.
