We recently connected with Tamara Solomson and have shared our conversation below.
Tamara , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The pandemic hit and the industry took a huge hit. A good portion of my work was producing live shows and events. It was during this time that I realized that I needed a change. I had some of the most amazing opportunities over the years, but after extensive travel, I felt I was ready to close that door. Leaving was bitter sweet and it felt a bit daunting to be starting over but it has proven to be the right decision. Having the opportunity to venture back to my creative side has changed both my professional and personal life for the better. Historically Haunted Cape Cod was the first project created by Big Bad Fly Films and that is one reason it will always be a bit special to me. The docuseries was made with a close-knit team, two of which were a father and son team, who got to film together for the last time. The series has been recently released, and while it was a small independent project, it was in a way, a huge accomplishment.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been interested in the arts and entertainment as far back as I can remember., my sister and I did our own little skits and by age 15 I was modeling, In my early 20s I moved to Florida and ended up coordinating fashion, shows and pageants which led me to having a deeper interest in working behind the scenes on a much larger scale. The industry is competitive, and I needed a bit more direction so I quit traveling for a bit and began attending Valencia college in Orlando Florida. During that time I picked up local freelance jobs and technical work at universal studios both of which gave me a great opportunity to network while learning. After graduation, it didn’t take long to find myself back on the road and this is where my career in live shows skyrocketed and the rest is history.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives are typically much stronger in business. It can be hard for them to understand the chaos and sensitivity of the creative mind. We tend to get ideas at the strangest times. I personally, find that I write down thoughts and ideas in various places, and they end up scattered about. Sometimes there are so many ideas and partial ideas that it becomes overwhelming and it can be a difficult task to focus on one. Speaking for myself, I found that while understanding business is imperative, it is the most draining aspect of what I do and takes a great deal of discipline for me. Bringing both the analytical and creative together can make for an incredible pair, It can also equally lead to a lot of friction if the two can’t meet somewhere in the middle.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I would say I have somewhat of a social media presence, but it hasn’t been a huge focus for me personally. I don’t want to worry about stats, likes and follows. Most of the people I am connected to are either people I’ve worked with or other industry professionals looking to network. I would say that social media has benefits, but it can also be very harmful for mental health. The best advice I can give is to forget about being perfect. Forget about being liked or even understood. Post, if and when you want to and on what you’re passionate about. Connect with people instead of looking at them as potential sales. There are many influencers online who have hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers and have not been able to convert that to financial gain. Focus on what you can do for others not what you’re hoping to get from them. Be willing to walk away if your work is not valued and above all don’t take any of this too seriously.
