We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Antione Jenkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Antione, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have ever worked on was the George Floyd Mural that I painted with my best friend in 2020. Living in Minnesota during the aftermath of George Floyd’s death was a tumultuous and emotional time for everyone. After participating in protests and experiencing the traumatic incident of a semi-truck driving into the crowd on the 35W Bridge, we were deeply affected. Despite the fear and pain, we knew we had to continue the fight for justice, and we decided to use our artistic talent to send a powerful message to the world.
Our mural depicted George Floyd as a guardian angel, protecting the protesters from harm, symbolizing his enduring influence and impact on the movement. The mural became a focal point for many in our community, a place for people to gather, grieve, and find solace during such a difficult time. It served as a reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice and working towards positive change.
During the creation of the mural, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by local news stations, as well as a few national stations like CNN, Fox 9, and ABC. This allowed me to share not only the meaning behind the mural but also my personal connection to the cause. Additionally, I was honored to collaborate with Spyhouse coffee in Minnesota to design and have my own drink on their menu. With 100% of the proceeds from this drink going to the non-profit organization Juxtaposition, which is a youth-oriented visual art center in North Minneapolis. Juxtaposition is known for its community collaborations, studio classes and workshops, public mural programs, and art exhibitions, making it the perfect beneficiary for our efforts.
The entire experience was both emotionally and professionally fulfilling. Being able to use my artistic skills to contribute to such an important cause and seeing the impact it had on the community was truly gratifying. It showed me the power that art has in conveying messages and sparking conversations about social issues. This project not only allowed me to express my feelings about the injustice we were witnessing but also gave me a sense of purpose and determination to continue using my talents to advocate for positive change in the world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Antione Jenkins, I am from Coon Rapids, Minnesota. I grew up as the oldest in my family, living with my great grandma and her sister in a four-bedroom house that housed 13 people, including my siblings and cousins. Our upbringing was steeped in old values, shaped by the close-knit environment and the challenges of limited resources.
Despite the hardships, we found joy in simple pleasures like playing sports such as baseball and basketball, nurturing our artistic interests, and enjoying the comfort of old music. Money was tight, so we learned to be resourceful and frugal, making careful decisions about our expenses.
I’m a versatile artist who finds inspiration in various forms of expression. My creative works span a wide range of mediums, allowing me to bring my thoughts and emotions to life. Some of my primary creations include captivating canvas paintings, striking murals that transform spaces, unique and stylish clothing, custom-designed shoes, and innovative household products. Each piece is crafted with passion and dedication to convey meaningful messages and aesthetics. To best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem, society should embrace art as an accessible and integral part of life. We should prioritize appreciating the simple beauty that surrounds us, rather than being distracted by superficial things. Investing in arts education, providing opportunities for artists to showcase their work, and offering fair compensation are crucial steps. By fostering a supportive environment, we can empower artists to thrive and contribute to a more enriched and connected society.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Despite being early in my career, I am driven by a vision to leave a lasting legacy and bring positive change to this generation. I want the world to know that I am committed to becoming a legend in the art world and making a meaningful impact through my work. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the willingness to embrace new opportunities. I take immense pride in my journey as an artist, where every step has been a testament to my passion and dedication. Transitioning from my childhood dream of playing basketball to becoming a renowned artist has been a defining moment for me. It was incredible to see a pair of shoes I designed being featured on ESPN just weeks after embarking on this creative path. Another achievement that fills me with joy is the mural I created, which garnered global attention and appreciation.
