Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelly Fogel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I have been working with Ohana One for several years. They are a group of surgeons and medical professionals using smart glasses and other technology to train surgeons around the world where they don’t have a specialist in their field to learn from.
I never thought photography would take me into operating rooms around the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my career in the marketing department of a major record label which lead to heading up artist relations and marketing for Rock the Vote and eventually artist management. All along the way in the music business I would take photos on music video sets and on the road. Eventually I chose to take a break from the music industry and focus on documentary photography.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My photography is driven by telling stories through my lens that might not be seen otherwise. I choose projects that will have the most impact on society. I was the stills photographer on a documentary called Unzipped about income inequality in Venice, CA that was shot over a 3 year period following families.
The mission driving my creative journey is to find stories that need to be told in a dignified and compassionate manner.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is finding friends and mentors along the way that have taught me so much and being able to pay that forward through my own mentoring and teaching. I have been a photography mentor for Venice Arts and Pablove Shutterbugs and have mentored hundreds of kids through these programs.
