We were lucky to catch up with Julie Davitz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Julie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Stories (books, films, campaigns, even commercials) are at the core of our humanness. Stories hold our history, connect us, educate us and inspire us. After decades working with some of the nonprofit and for-profit leaders in the impact space, I’d seen hundreds of beautiful, passionate stories about both the challenges facing our world, and the innovative and creative solutions working toward solving them. But I also saw a critical gap—as much as we love and are inspired by those stories, when the film ends, the campaign closes, or the event run is over…now what? I knew there was a way to use today’s technology to bridge that gap and turn inspiration into action, scaling positive impact. Enter +Media. Our effective technology solution gives audiences and consumers a seamless, immediate way to access curated and vetted solutions, opportunities, information, experiences and products that are carefully aligned with the causes they’re passionate about, as well as other important data such as their interests, skills, or geographic location. It’s time for impact measurement to go beyond likes and shares. +Media enables and reports concrete impact behavior. This valuable data tells content producers, event planners, and brands what actually resonates with their audience.
Our global challenges are daunting, yes. But solutions to our greatest problems are out there and they work. By giving easy access to this information at the very moment of interest, people around the world can be empowered, informed and more hopeful for the future.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We spend literally millions of hours consuming content on mobile devices. More than two-thirds of Americans report caring about social causes. Audiences and consumers want to engage, and they expect immediacy. +Media reaches audiences and consumers where they are, at the moment of interest, and provides a carefully curated and vetted menu of solutions-based opportunities. With one click or scan, that moment of inspiration is transformed into learn and act choices that go way beyond the overused donate and volunteer options. Instead of driving meaningless likes and shares, we can empower people to take action on the issues they care about — and measure truly impactful behaviors.
+Media is a white label impact service for any brand, event or content piece that looks to engage audiences with clear, effective positive impact messaging and concrete, measurable impact behavior.
+Media’s offering works. Industry engagement stands around 2%, while +Media often records 24% engagement and higher. We know the consumer. We know impact. We know, and we’ve proven, our approach to engagement and measurement.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
While we often hear lip service about financial support for women entrepreneurs, in my experience, this is often all talk and no action. From VCs to SBA loans, ultra-high-net-worth individuals to banks, investors like to position themselves as supporting women and entrepreneurs. The truth is, when you get into that meeting, submit copious amounts of paperwork, and are even ready to sign away your life savings, the response is the same. Not enough cash flow (yes, we’re a startup), not enough cash reserves (again, we’re a startup), not strong enough profit projections (we’re honest).
As I pitched for funding, presenting my company with a fully functioning team and product, revenue, recurring revenue and a full pipeline of potential clients, I witnessed my male counterparts pitching with NO revenue, NO recurring revenue, NO clients, NO product. Guess who got funding. Yep. The guys without a product.
So I bootstrapped +Media with my savings and leaned heavily on business development. The guys never got off the ground and the investors lost millions.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’m a single mother who raised three sons while working full time. I got a very late start in the corporate and entrepreneurial sector. At times, the boys and I had nothing. (And feeding three boys is serious business!) I had to borrow money to pay for groceries. I was the mom who always packed food from home for movies and road trips – no way would I pay for food outside! I got creative. I took side hustles whenever I could. At one point I rented out a spare room in our rental in order to make ends meet. But, those years of “making it work” — figuring out how to feed and house my children and still be a mother — taught me to be tough, never give up and to find solutions. Through +Media, I aim to bring those same skills to the impact space so we can go from talking and caring about solutions to taking collective action and doing huge things, for ourselves, each other, and the planet.
