We recently connected with Jason Vorse and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My passion started from my passion of gardening and flowers influenced by my grandmother and Auntie. Growing and seeing Mother Nature produce such gorgeous things got me. I from there got one of my first jobs at a local nursery. I did a lot of watering and weeding but was able to be with such beautiful product and specimens. I entered the Master Gardeners program at 17 and entered shortly there after a horticulture program at a local school. following I quickly entered a floral design institute in the Seattle area. I’m not sure what I could have done to speed up the learning process. I think that each of these steps really aloud me to learn and explore the necessary things. entering the design world and moving to Los Angeles I was afforded many opportunities to push and hone my floral design skills. Not only large scale celebrity events but floral fashion and sculptural projects. Pushing my knowledge of plant physiology to allow me to manipulate and design in a different way. having this knowledge aloud me to design these “not traditional” florals in an effective way. the understanding of the makeup of florals aloud me to succeed in these creative projects.
I’m not sure I would identify any of these as obstacles in my learning process. I was a young open vessel eager to learn. to test things in a new and fresh way.
Jason, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
from an early age I grew to love and appreciate Mother Nature. I studied not only the growing and makeup of this product but on a personal level the growth and movement of flowers and foliages. How can I make this into something else. How can I bend or manipulate this to make it into a different structure. I have always had the desire to see things as to what they could be… Design is not Art. Design is forming a solution “esthetically” for a task at hand. ie, size, price point, style. this knowledge allows me to do this for my wide variety of clients. knowing this I feel I can successfully use this to benefit my clients and their needs.
I’m most proud of my ability to see things differently and my studies that allow me to use product in a different way. Creating texti9les out of living materials and them using that to fabricate floral fashion is probably what excites me the most. My younger fearless days really oloud this to flourish.
“typically” flowers need to be in water. well not always. knowing a bit about flowers and foliages in a scientific way allows me to use things different. Not needing a water source. what I can pull completely apart and reconstruct in a different form. Whether a rose or orchid. sculptural reconstruction is endless. This is where passion comes in for me. Make it what you want it to be. Is it a hat now or a dress.? Maybe….
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to choose this one. YES! Literally every day in business. Every client is different. The only constant in the world is change. And that surly relates to every project, daily orders and life in general. We pivot in daily business as well as event structure to Make it all work. A Major pivot was covid. A small business having canceled every event for nearly two years. the absolute necessity to pivot of mandatory.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There are so many instances as a business owner that applies to this one. I suppose the financial aspect as a new business making sure expenses or covered. taxes, employees, ect…this is just part of the day to day. Making it happen no matter what. Creatively speaking when new projects are presented. finding a way through design to effectively make it all happen. Finding ways to keep honing your skills. pushing boundaries and learning daily so you can stay at the top of your game. how do I stay ahead of the game. how do I dictate the next design trend and do it first. How do I show myself in a different way. this is always on the forefront of my mind. I constantly force myself to experiment not only in design but in business. Pushing the boundaries.
