Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cortez Campos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cortez, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
As a director, I constantly search for new creative entertainment methods. Several times, my abstract narrative filmmaking has led to skepticism. Despite this, I don’t let go of my vision and challenge conventional cinema. I know change is not easy, but through my distinct creative voice, I will push cinema to revolutionary heights. In time, my art will transcend misunderstanding and make a lasting impact on the world.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I became a filmmaker because I fell in love with the power of creativity. I could create my world and its reality. I could tell any story any way I wanted. I can communicate the stories I want to share with the world through cinema.
I constantly aim to give my audience a new perspective every time they watch my films. Through experimental techniques, I convey new perspectives and challenge conventional storytelling norms. My movies are crafted for open-minded audiences who wish to explore the diverse intricacies of our world.
My films utilize abstract metaphorical visuals to convey my characters’ perspectives. This provides an inside look into the minds of my characters while also allowing viewers to interpret the reality of my stories. In my film, Space Oddity, an astronaut starts to run out of oxygen when stranded in space. As the stars dance and the moon stares at him, we wonder if this astronomical spectacle is happening or just within our character’s mind. Through this method of filmmaking, I can display the astronaut’s perspective; or the mind of any other character.
People tend to overlook or be indifferent to the experiences of others when they don’t pertain to their own. This catalyzes me to tell the stories of those whose voices have been disregarded. A film’s most effective tool is empathy. By shedding light on underrepresented individuals, I want to unite different communities and foster connection.
My role as a filmmaker is to entertain and educate awareness. Through my films, I provoke discussions and challenge preconceived notions. I spark conversation and present narratives that showcase alternative perspectives to our own. I encourage my viewers to question their knowledge and broaden their horizons to foster empathy and inclusivity.
My passion for directing stems from the untold stories I wish to tell. Through unconventional filmmaking methods, I can better showcase new perspectives. I strive to inspire my viewers to empathize with the individuals we overlook.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back in my senior year of high school, I had this burning need to prove myself as a filmmaker. Sure, I had dabbled in creating stop motion shorts and skits for class, but I craved more knowledge and experience. The problem was, there were no resources, no mentors, and no one to turn to. So, I made up my mind to take a leap and make my very first serious short film.
I locked myself in my room, poured my heart into writing a script, and reached out to fellow filmmakers on social media. It was a rollercoaster ride of hearing “no” and facing rejection time and time again. But I didn’t let that stop me. I kept pushing, and eventually, I managed to gather a kickass cast and crew who were just as passionate as I was.
We hit the ground running and brought “Joshua,” my film, to life. Now, let me be real with you—it wasn’t a perfect masterpiece, but man, did I learn a ton while making it. Every moment on set was a lesson in itself, and I grew as a director with every step.
You know what? The most incredible part was having an amazing crew who always had my back. They believed in me, my passion, and my vision. That kind of support meant the world to me. Looking back, that project defines me as a filmmaker today. The biggest lesson I learned was that anyone has the power to create something extraordinary.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling part of my job is how I create stories that connect with a wide range of audiences. I can explore and learn about many different types of people. By creating narratives that resonate with these audiences, I can encourage others to empathize with them and become more self-aware of themselves.
To do this, I have to understand different communities and their uniqueness. I must research and understand who they are, how they view the world, and the challenges they face. From the initial stages of developing the screenplay to the final touches of post-production, I am driven to create immersive and truthful stories for my viewers to experience. Every decision I make as a director strives to achieve this goal while resonating with my audience.
