We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vee Weir. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vee below.
Vee, appreciate you joining us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
When I began Weir Digital Marketing (and Vee Frugal Fox), I was a team of one. I quickly realized that building a trusting and resourceful community was priceless, as was surrounding myself with a knowledgable and dedicated team. What we do cannot be done in a vacuum. Social media marketing is inherently social.
For a while I believed I could “do it all,” but I was doing my clients and my audience a disservice. In 2020 I brought on my business partner, Kayli Johnson and in 2022, we hired our Virtual Assistant, Ava Yakub. We also have formed strong professional and personal connections with other industry peers and companies. This makes us competitive, reachable, and quick in our content creation and strategy.
Because we relied on our ability to build a trusting and resourceful community, finding experienced and qualified team members is relatively easy. I pull from my Vee Frugal Fox audience when I need additional help. That’s how we found Ava.
Vee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In 2016 I began my debt free journey. I realized sitting at my kitchen table in the middle of the night that I had enough money to choose between food, medicine, and my student loan payments. Growing up lower-middle class, I knew I had to make a change or I would be stuck in that position forever. I decided to create my Instagram “blog,” Vee Frugal Fox, to document my journey to debt freedom.
From 2016-2017, I paid off $50k+ in debt. I also went through a separation and divorce. Post divorce, I paid off an additional $20k, remarried, and began my business, Weir Digital Marketing, a content creation firm specializing in organic content creation for influencers and brands in the personal finance industry. I’m an award-winning personal finance content creator and have been featured in just about every press outlet in the country.
Weir Digital Marketing is unique in that we focus solely on personal finance education, entertainment, information and product creation. We have an intimate understanding of social media marketing AND personal finance. My origins are from the personal finance realm and I took that passion and transformed it into a profitable, unique business.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale isn’t as difficult as people make it out to be. Pay a livable wage, praise people when they do a good job, always maintain open communication (including when you’re giving constructive criticism), and remember that without your team you wouldn’t be able to do what you do. Being a boss isn’t about you, it’s about fostering a supportive work environment, growing people, and doing what’s best for your clients.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I’ve known Kayli Johnson, my business partner, for 6 years. We became easy, close friends, and when I was exploring the option of bringing on a partner, I knew she would fit the position perfectly. As a former teacher, Kayli has a way of taking the most complicated processes and translating them into actionable procedures. Kayli is also a talented graphic designer with a pension for designs that will perform well on social media.
Kayli is loyal, dedicated, eager to learn new things, and can talk most people “off the ledge.” She is a natural born leader and nurturer, which is a wonderful combination of what it takes to be a business owner. There is no one else I trust more and there is no one else that could fill her role at Weir Digital Marketing.
