We were lucky to catch up with Denay Hayden, RN recently and have shared our conversation below.
Denay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Throughout my time as a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, I found my love for supporting families and helping them feel confident and equipped in caring for their precious baby. I also found that many parents were nervous to go home and lose their support once they walked out of those hospital doors. I wanted to create a system and community of support for families beyond those hospital walls, and that is when I discovered The Mama Coach. The Mama Coach is made up of Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners that open their own independent Mama Coach practice to offer education, care, and support in their community. This is how my practice, The Mama Coach – Denay Hayden, was born, and I now help families through prenatal planning, navigating the newborn period, feeding support, and sleep coaching. Beyond my nursing expertise and education, I am passionate about surrounding these mamas and families with resources, other experts, and a community of other moms to not only survive motherhood, but to thrive! I have created support packages, mama meetups, and other events to do just that.

Denay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a nurse for the past 5 years, primarily caring for the neonatal and pediatric population. A big part in caring for these little individuals is supporting and educating the families. I found there was a need for ongoing support and education outside of the hospital, and I created The Mama Coach – Denay Hayden to do just that, virtually, and also in-home for those that are located in/near Charlotte, NC. I offer support as early as prenatally, through private and group prenatal classes to help prepare couples for birth and postpartum so they can make informed decisions about their birth plan. I then offer newborn support packages, to help families navigate that exciting but often overwhelming newborn phase. This includes help with feeding, sleep, soothing techniques, and help answering the hundreds of questions that come with having a newborn. I also offer ongoing lactation and feeding support packages to help tackle any feeding challenges. I would say one of the most popular areas of support I offer is sleep coaching. My two week sleep package includes a consultation to help form a personalized sleep plan for your little one, and then two weeks of help implementing that plan through an interactive sleep log, coaching calls, and email support.
What sets me apart from other lactation consultants and sleep consultants, is that I am a registered nurse that utilizes my assessment skills to create personalized plans with your family’s goals in mind. I do not have one specific “method”, because each child is different, and I work with each family to provide the best outcomes for that family! My passion is to not only just help your family, but also build a community of ongoing support around you.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is such an asset to the business world today and getting your name and business in front of more people. Social media can also be hard and time consuming. I have spent my time building my social media platforms through authentic interactions and building a community. Many moms that I have connected with through social media have been my biggest advocates by attending events, sharing content, and helping build our Mama Coach community.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
One of the many things I love about my Mama Coach practice is that I can support families in many areas that come with parenthood. Instead of families needing to find three different resources for a prenatal class, lactation help, and sleep training, I can support families in all three. This gives the family confidence and continuity in who they are working with. I also love creating connections with families, and this allows us to build that connection past our couple weeks of working together. I see all the families I work with as part of my Mama Coach community. They are invited to Mama Meetups, community events, and included in special offers. This fosters support beyond any package and I love that!
