We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamilah Mahone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamilah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s go back in time a bit – can you share a story of a time when you learned an important lesson during your education?
Well for me the biggest impact from school is when I dropped out of high school . Although prior to dropping out I made a promise to myself I would still finish my education and make something of myself it was definitely a life changer and I found out QUICK life was not as simple as I thought and dropping out and getting my G.E.D didn’t make things impossible but definitely made it harder than life needed to be . If I didn’t take anything from it I now know education is the key to any and everything and to appreciate free and paid for knowledge .
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Jamilah but everyone knows me by “peaches “ I’m 27yrs old and started my business in 2016 at 22yrs old . I am a hairstylist that specializes in weaves but not limited to . I took interest in hair honestly because everyone kept telling me “I need to do hair” not realizing that’s really what I wanted and meant to do and literally one day I said I wanted to try it out , I’ve always done my own and friends but never a client , so I started advertising my own pictures of what I did on myself in search for models via fb and IG and eventually booked my first client and she was so happy it made me happy to make her happy and feel like herself and beautiful again I knew then , YUP this is what I want to do and from then I been marketing my business/brand . What is something that sets me apart from others ? I would say my customer service/ communication skills . I try my best to keep in contact and communicate with my clients and answer any questions they may have because as simple as “hair” can be to us as stylist it’s a lot of people who don’t know how or have the same knowledge about hair and breaking prices and or processes down helps and make them more comfortable with knowing your know what your doing .
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lesson I’ve learn is to work at your own pace . Often times I found myself wonder why I’m not at a level that someone else is at , I was booking and clients was returning but it seem like I really wasn’t getting anywhere , BUT once I learned to focus on myself and “what’s for me is for me” things literally fell into place and at the timing that was for me.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my social media by constantly advertising myself wether it was Facebook , Instagram, 5 miles , Craig’s-list , whatever app I could advertise on I did . I did my research on the proper presentation and marketing and just stayed consistent . I also offered recommendations deals to my clients because “word of mouth” is the best way to advertise. I made cards and flyers and passed them out any and everywhere I went.
The main advice I would give , is to make sure you legitimize your business and be consistent and take reviews so people can see you are real . And be honest and consistent with your service or product .
