We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Billie Burroughs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Billie, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve been doing rapping since I was 16 years old. I’ve always enjoyed rhyming and skill it takes to put words together. I love painting pictures. Decided I really step it up when I turned 28 and start to start sharing my creativity and ability to rap with the world. Since then it was been a pleasure just seeing the response from people who understand and relate to my life and perspective.
Billie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As some who had always loved hip-hop I really just took it on as a passion because I was around it. When I reached the time I was ready to become a recording artist I was already familiar and friends with several people who were in the industry. I have to give special credit to my good friend Akeem Towns who really helped me get my start and develop in the booth.
From there I took it upon myself to grow and some of my influences gave me the push I needed to keep growing. I think because of that I’ve developed as an artist who know my identity. I think knowing who I am and realize how special my story is and why it’s needed in my music sets me apart from others. I pride myself in that.
Those are the things that I want my listeners to grab a hold of. That’s what I want them to learn and see from me. You don’t have to be disingenuous to who you are for attention. You are valuable and your skills are valuable not because of what you do but because of who you are.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The think currently driving me is my faith. I think my faith in God has been a major part of my message in my music along with just trying to be a loving husband and father. All of these thing together are what I want to put out in the world. I want leave a positive and encouraging mark on my legacy in hip-hop. In hip-hop and just music in general an artist is remembered by what they left the world with. That’s what I want to be remembered.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is just seeing my ideas come to life. I’m excited every time I finish a record and knowing that I’m still doing what I love at the highest level I can. Hearing the growth after each record and hearing myself tell my story more and more effectively each time. I feel rewarded knowing I got done what I set out to do from the start.
