We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Naranjo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started to rap at 14, I rapped party and bullshit by biggie smalls in my mom’s van with my cousins and I realized I loved rap. I then got a dictionary and began rhyming as many words as possible to perfect my rhymes and it took atleast 3 years till I became decent at rapping. I could of got a manager sooner to learn the business side and that would of helped my career alot because it took me 5 years to get signed to my first record label in my hometown of L.A. I think the most essential skills is motivation and true lyricism because nowadays people don’t care about that like they use too. Not having enough money growing up slowed down my process because I couldn’t invest in my career until I was 19. At 19 I was signed and my mentor/label boss helped me learn alot about recording process and performing a great show.
Chris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into rapping because of my love for old school rappers and my fascination with rhymes and using complex syllables for my raps. I am set apart from others because I can freestyle for over 24hours straight with no end. I have true lyricism and am very versatile because I can do r&b , old school raps, trap, ETC. I am proud that I no longer curse in my music and try to push a positive message that is very relatable to most. I want people to know that I am trying to bring back real rap and not mumbling and talking about girls, money , cars always like most rappers do in today’s atmosphere . My record label I own is called Christ Patriot Records and I am trying to show people that you can be anything in this world as long as you put your mind to it. I’ve had a management company for the last year that has greatly increased my reach and taught me extensively about the business side of the industry. I want artists today to understand the importance of marketing and having a good understanding of the business side instead of just releasing tracks with no promotion.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes having a management company because with marketing you can have a much bigger reach than you would have otherwise and knowledge of the business side. Before I did not know the importance of marketing and would just release songs whenever but now I realize I need a strategy before releasing to get the most out of a song.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having people be inspired by my music is the most rewarding part to me. I have struggled for a long time with severe depression and anxiety and I don’t want others to go through what I have so if I can help anybody in a positive way that would be amazing. That’s the reason I do this, I do I for the people with no friends, those struggling to be happy and I hope I can be that light for them even though I’m far from perfect.
