We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Seairra Hulbert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Seairra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
Seairra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Before entering the hair industry, I worked as an employee at Hobby Lobby, and my cashier manager happened to have a sister who worked in a salon. It was through their influence that I eventually found myself working as an assistant in the salon. I am forever grateful to Brittany, Brandi, and Ms. Sandra Blouin at Salon Centerfold in Conyers, GA, for their guidance during those early days. Over time, my passion for doing hair grew immensely. Today, I am proud to have my own salon suite, HairMystiques, where I offer a range of services including natural hair care, coloring, haircuts, styles, wig making, and installations. I am also working towards providing specialized services and more options for clients with hair loss. My personal experience with alopecia has ignited a strong passion and drive within me to provide beauty and hair care solutions for women. Having been in the client’s chair myself, I now stand behind the chair, uplifting and serving others. I make it a point to let my clients know that I am not just a stylist motivated by money but a dedicated professional who cares deeply about hair health. Each individual’s needs and preferences are taken into account, ensuring a personalized approach to their hair care. And yes, I still enjoy the simple pleasures of shampooing and all the other good stuff too.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
When it comes to attracting new clients, the key factors that have worked well for me are consistency and positive word of mouth. By consistently delivering excellent service and ensuring clients are satisfied, they become advocates for my business, spreading the word to their friends, family, and acquaintances.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Now, let’s talk about resilience. I have a story to share. There was a time when I had to give up my first salon suite because I didn’t have enough clients to sustain it, and life was challenging. I temporarily stepped away from doing hair, but destiny had other plans. I kept finding myself in situations that pushed me to continue pursuing my passion for hairstyling. It was almost comical as I would say to myself, “God, I hear you loud and clear!” The love I have for this profession is so strong that I couldn’t let it go, despite feeling sad and fearful about starting over. I knew deep down that I had to keep going. It was no coincidence that I experienced hair loss due to alopecia, yet I possessed the gift to do hair and serve God with it. This realization fueled my determination to persevere and provide beauty and hair care solutions for women. Even in moments of doubt, I understand that pushing forward is inevitable.
