Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wayne Butler . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Wayne , thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I have been an entrepreneur my whole life. After age 16 normal 9-5 jobs just didn’t make sense. I tried everything from door to door, phone sales, to trade show/fairs. I owned my own business for 15 years right before the pandemic. My daughter and I have also been a comedy duo on social media. We just did it for fun but eventually we went viral and had over 25 global features on Musically app which is now Tiktok. I spent many days sometimes weeks away from my family running my business. I traveled all over the country and managed and trained sales teams. In 2020 when we were in lockdown I lost my business due to being unable to travel. My family didn’t want me to be in public so I had to think quickly on how to make a living from home. That’s when our viral series Hey Cam was born. We’ve always done comedy and skits but I needed to find something that didn’t take as much time to edit. I started doing dad jokes on my daughter and filming her reactions. The series immediately took off! Our first joke video was republished on Reddit and MTV Ridiculousness and received more than 50M views worldwide. Our social media account quickly grew from the thousands to the hundreds of thousands. We had management teams reaching out to us and viral media groups wanting to use our videos. Since I spent so much time away from my family in business I feel fortunate to be able to be with them all the time now. I am now a full time content creator/social media personality. We make a good income with ads in videos, and brand sponsorships. We have management and a team of agents that pitch us daily to brands and publications. We also have a family podcast called Famous-ish and sell merch for our Hey Cam brand! If you would have told me in 2019 that I’d be making a living in 2023 making silly videos with my family, I would have laughed. This is surreal to me and I’m thankful everyday!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I guess I answered this previously, oops I am fortunate to do what I love for a living. Even though I love business and sales. My main enjoyment is making people laugh. I have done stand up comedy and really enjoy the rush it provides. Everybody is going through something, especially during the pandemic, and it makes me feel good to be able to spread positivity during the hard times. People message me all the time about how my videos made their day! Or how they were having a bad day until they found us. Makes me feel good to be able to help people smile and laugh through our silly videos!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Here’s something I can definitely say. Don’t worry about the critics, haters, and trolls Don’t let them deter you from your success or goals. I spent a good majority of my life trying to please everyone and was so concerned about what they thought of me. In social media I was obsessed with my likes, views, and follow count. The best thing I did was to stop worrying. Just continue to do what makes you happy and what you feel is good content. You’re not going to please everyone and you’re going to get a lot of hate. That’s okay. Because the people that enjoy your videos and content far outweigh the ones that do not.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Something that you wouldn’t know by looking at me or watching my videos is that I’m legally deaf. I’ve been deaf in my right ear since 2 years old due to an illness and a 2 week coma. My left ear wasn’t an issue until the last 10 years. Now I wear a hearing aid and without it it’s almost like an on/off switch lol. I can’t hear a thing. In my business I could hear and could do things on the phones, have conversations, do sales etc. As my hearing declined, so did my confidence. I had to figure out a way to keep going even though it was near impossible to do the simplest task like renting a car. In life in general this was a very big challenge. If you’re married I highly recommend you go deaf 🤣 just kidding. But my wife and I don’t argue anymore. Again I’m fortunate to be able to do videos for a living because I don’t necessarily need my hearing 100%. I use my aid for everything else such as podcast and interviews. I had to relearn how to hear people’s voices and to continue my social media/sales journey.
