We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Rubinstein. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents have always been open minded and completely supportive of my decisions in life and most of my choices. Not to say they didn’t challenge me from time to time when I might not have been making the correct ones; or so they thought, But they always stood by me and said I could do anything, especially in the arts.. they always thought that was my niche even before I ever did.. When I decided to take a break from traditional college to find my way that lead me to photography, they where 100% on board. Having someone there, behind you, that you have trusted your entire life saying that is ok to be nervous, but to take the leap anyway, was a huge catalyst for me to move forward with the decision to go back to school for photography and then start my own business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Looking back on it, I always had a camera in my hand, but it was really for only documentation of what was going on with me, around me, and what was fun and beautiful. I never thought to make a career of it, that was never on my radar. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon a commercial photography class in Scottsdale, where i was living at the time, that completely opened my eyes to that possibility,
it was such a foreign. idea, to make a living out of this thing.
After that, it was school to specialize in photography and learn what I could.
Then it was hitting the pavement, finding small jobs in editorial… knocking on doors and calling art directors and anyone who would possibly hire me,
Out of school, my two specialties were food and interiors, My first jobs ranged from photographing new restaurant openings, to doing small shoots for monthly food write ups, Those shoots morphed into editorial features that included both food and interiors.
After putting in the 10,000 hours of small but satisfying jobs, one thing led to another and I was getting asked to travel and photograph hotels and resorts for major players in the hotel industry
I now have an amazing team of freelancers that I work with on a daily basis that make my life easier because of their work ethic and creativity,
We get to meet and work with so many great new people and I love the fact that being freelance allows me to do the travel and also keep working with clients that I have had for many years and those relationships are still going strong.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I truly believe you have to have a natural talent to do this type of work, but I believe even stronger that you have to be punctual, understanding, fair, and a truly easy to work with human being to stay releavant and get clients to refer you. If they love to work with you, and you hand over quality work, they WILL call you again.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
It is a little all over the place ion how I keep in touch with clients. Some I email throughout the year, Some I keep in touch with on social media and some I just pick up the phone and call, but all of them are treated the same. Like I mentioned above. I really just try to deliver the best product I personally can and have fair business practices that encompass both myself and my clients.
We are trying to have fun while creating beauty , everybody should win.
