We were lucky to catch up with Skylar Sorkin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Skylar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I’ve been dreaming of starting my own podcast for years now. My vision all started in college while I was attending UCSB and I knew that I wanted to make an impact. I grew up performing; whether it was dancing, acting, hosting, or even being a published author by the age of 13, so speaking, leading, and having a voice were always a huge part of my life. Once I graduated and started my first “big girl” job I started to realize how challenging it was to actually “do life” and enter this new phase of “adulting.” We were never taught how to navigate life, such as budget, date, taxes, ask for a raise, cope with trauma, anxiety, depression, and self-comparison! As students, we were never given this syllabus on how to actually navigate our twenties. While having these realizations, and actually experiencing the “twenty-something” growing pains myself, I would reach out to my mentors, and incredible superhumans in my life to receive support, guidance, and resources which helped me further navigate difficult situations and first-time experiences! For this reason, I decided to start Regardless, You’ve Got This. I knew that my voice, leadership, bravery, and purpose were to share my knowledge, my network of superhumans, and be a resource, a voice for twenty-somethings. I knew this would work because it doesn’t exist, there aren’t enough resources out there for twenty-somethings to feel energized, empowered, supported, and confident about their future and where they are NOW. So I went for it. regardless of failure, regardless of imperfection, I went for it. I created a podcast and here we are five months into it with over 3k subscribers and I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Skylar, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a 24-year-old innovator, artist, entrepreneur, and human connector. I’ve had about 19 years of experience in performing arts, dance, theater, hosting, and speaking at large events. For my full-time job, I’m a Senior Inside Sales Manager for an influencer marketing agency in Los Angeles called The Social Standard – we connect brands with creators to create full-service influencer marketing campaigns as well as experiential activations.
Personally, I’ve experienced a lot growing up, whether that’s navigating through difficult friendships, romantic relationships, eating disorders, trauma, family illness, how to ask for a raise, etc. I’m grateful for these experiences because I have an abundance of lessons, people, stories, and tools to share with my peers and following. Through my work, always putting myself out there, as well as my deep organic network, I find myself having empowering conversations with superhumans that inspire and support my trajectory as a twenty-something-year-old.
I think we can all agree that college didn’t provide us with a syllabus on “how to do life” or “how to adult.” Which may be the most confusing, scary, and emotional part about growing up. I believe it’s time for twenty-somethings to feel empowered, certain, supported, and in control of their dreams and future. If we have the tools in front of us to do so, imagine how kick-ass our generation would be and what badasses we would be by our 30s. That’s precisely why I decided to create Regardless, a platform that is the home to unique stories, conversations, and syllabuses that belong to my special network of superhumans, people who have truly enriched my life by sharing resources & tools that have helped them to succeed REGARDLESS of the limitations they may have faced growing up.
I’m the proudest of just going for it, regardless of failing. I’m the proudest of always speaking my truth, showing up as the authentic me, regardless of whether or not someone agrees or likes me. I’m the proudest of Regardless. Regardless is the most authentic pathway I’ve ever created for myself and what’s even better is that I know I’m inspiring others in doing so, it’s my miracle.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is the impact. Impact which stems from your purest form of self, passion, drive, vision, and seeing that come to life is unexplainable, it’s truly a dream. When your vision and passion come together to create a whole new world that starts to relate and inspire others, it’s the most energizing feeling in the entire world. I can now understand why we created entrepreneurship. Work doesn’t feel like work, instead, you’re just in flow every time you’re in your work.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Life is anything but a smooth road, but I believe the bumps are what make life so dang precious. Growing up, I’ve experienced adversity in several areas, which has been difficult, to say the least. But without these adversities, I wouldn’t be Skylar and there wouldn’t have been any existing fuel to create Regardless. I think sometimes we get so caught up in the idea of just plateauing through life, or believing “I’ll be happy once I lose the 20 pounds, start the new job, or move to a new city,” but the true bliss is in the LIFE, the ZEST, the GROWTH, and the BEAUTY. The ups and downs of the journey are what shape our own regardless story.
One story that showcases my resilience was during my time throughout college and a little bit after post-graduation when I had an eating disorder. This disorder was fueled by other people’s comments, judgments, my own judgments, the need to feel “enough”, and overall “worthy”. My self-worth was defined by the way I looked and felt. I lost my zest for life, connection, and relationships. Food controlled me. Through immense self-work, tears, therapy, journaling, reading, two romantic relationships, and the end of several friendships, I discovered my inner light again. The one phrase that woke me up (my mom told me), I’ll never forget was, “get better for your future self, fuel your body for your future self.” Don’t get me wrong, getting out of denial, taking responsibility and action took grit, it took everything. But I wouldn’t take it back for the world.
I believe when horrible things happen whether it’s a breakup, an eating disorder, or trauma, we get to choose how we react, we get to choose our future. I’m always learning, working, and growing regardless of what comes my way, I’ve got this and you do too.
