We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leslie Daniels Kibbee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leslie below.
Alright, Leslie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I went to school to study pre-law and moved out to Los Angeles to pursue acting immediately after graduating. When I first got to LA, I was kicking myself for not beginning my career sooner. I had told my parents I wanted to be an actress at ten years old, after all. Now I was the ripe age of 21! Oh no! I thought that if only I got here sooner or even started acting when I was a kid, then I would be a lot further along. I think a lot of more green actresses think they have to be “young and hot” to have a career and therefore they have to “hurry up” and I was in that camp. It didn’t take me long to discover that my experiences in life unrelated to acting have made me into a unique, yet well-adjusted person. Turns out, I’m still young and I have a whole career ahead of me so I’m in no hurry!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been into performing! I was a theater nerd all throughout middle and high school. My very first role ever was a vulture in my middle school performance of The Jungle Book. I suspect that the drama teacher had too many kids and not enough roles, so she got creative. I’ve come a long way since then, moving to Los Angeles and starting to work with the big kids. Although I tend to audition for and book more dramatic roles, I have a soft spot for comedy. In my personal time, I love doing standup. I think laughter is really important for the soul. I think if you can laugh at the dumb life stuff that we all inevitably deal with, you’ve got it made!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m not the best person to give advice to someone who is wanting millions of followers because I don’t have that for myself but for people who just want to put themselves out there on social media, I say be authentic! Find something you like to do or enjoy posting about and post it. Just be yourself, it’s not that serious. Try to be specific. One day, I was bored during covid quarantine so I made one of those little voiceover videos that everyone was doing during that time. I posted it and to this day I still do them. They’re all Kardashian related and funny so I’ve developed a bit of a base around that!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This is a funny story! I was about to head to my first ever acting class in Los Angeles. I had no idea what to expect and I wasn’t sure if maybe I would be around intimidating famous actors or if maybe I would be instructed to cry on command in front of 500 people right off the bat. My brain went wild and I didn’t know what to think, so of course I googled it. I typed in “what happens in an acting class in Los Angeles” and one of the responses that came up had me thinking that I would have to perform a monologue. At the time, I didn’t know what a monologue was. My drama teachers in middle and high school had failed me. Not knowing what to do, I opened up a random page from a book on my bookshelf and started memorizing. I had about 10 minutes to prepare to deliver a compelling enough monologue that the teacher would allow me to take the class. I ran out of time, so I settled on making something up on the spot if need be. When I got to the class there were no famous actors, no crying and nowhere near 500 people. Just a few other people like me. All I had to do was read sides in front of a camera. That’s it. And I sucked!
