We were lucky to catch up with Hanyu Gao recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hanyu, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
As an editor, I have always been diligently following the rules of film language I learned in school. However, recently a co-worker of mine mentioned that, due to the impact of short videos, audiences nowadays are gradually adapting to unconventional editing techniques, some editing methods we used to consider as wrong might not be wrong anymore.
This made me rethink my past working experiences, and I realized that many so-called editing rules are not absolute; as long as we carefully plan our shots, breaking these rules can lead to better visual effects.
I believe that in the future of the editing industry, editing will become a more liberated form of creativity, offering greater possibilities and space for innovation.
Hanyu, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a video editor, and my dream is to become a film editor. However, currently, I edit a variety of content, including commercials, short films, promotional videos, and more. I believe my strengths in my work are being able to complete tasks quickly and having a lot of patience. With my extensive work experience, I can also come up with solutions to problems as quickly as possible when they arise.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Once, I was working on a promotional video for a company, and my client was an entire team. Each member of the team had different ideas, and there was no consensus at the beginning. I ended up revising the project at least 20 versions, often going back and forth to previous versions. At one point, I even considered giving up on the project, but I persevered.
Through continuous and meticulous communication and collaboration, I managed to complete the video on time. I maintained a friendly relationship with the client’s team, and they were very satisfied with the final result. I was also pleased with the outcome, and it brought me a great sense of joy to see things come to a pleasant conclusion.
This experience further improved my communication skills and patience, taking them to the next level.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I have tried to develop clients on social platforms and freelance websites, but I ultimately found that the most effective approach is to step outside my home and engage in networking with peers. Once you have one client, give your best effort to deliver exceptional results, as satisfied clients can become a source of new referrals and bring in more clients over time.
