Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tara Peyman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tara, thanks for joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
One of the most heartwarming and inspiring stories from my medical practice comes from a patient of mine, who came to me in 2017. She was seeking help for complex PTSD, insomnia, and depression. She had a diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder, which is a mental health condition that in her case was a result of severe early childhood trauma. Her nightmares, flashbacks, and dissociation were extreme, and she was unable to work due to these symptoms. Her case presented me with many challenges over the years of our work together, and we both needed to dig deep to stay grounded and hopeful, and to continue the fight towards recovering from her traumatic past. Over time in working together with holistic medicine and coaching, I have witnessed an extraordinary transformation within her, from being internally fragmented and fearful to embracing herself with loving kindness, insightful understanding, and compassion. Because of the intensity of her case, it caused me to need to rise up to be the best version of myself, in order to care for her. This was a gift to me as well as to her, because I was able to show up for her with strength and determination, and also become my best self in the process. Now, she is embarking on a new venture of going public with her story of healing from trauma, and is about to launch a podcast about PTSD and dissociation. I feel honored that I have played a part in her remarkable journey, I will always treasure the power and beauty of this unique healing experience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am the co-owner and Clinical Director of Integrative Mental Health Center. We are a clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona that has a team of naturopathic doctors with an expertise in holistic mental health care. I have a particular focus in the treatment of bipolar disorder, complex trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, and schizophrenia. I use a combination of holistic therapies, along with prescriptions when needed, in the treatment of these complex cases. We love getting to know each of our clients as individuals, and creating a treatment plan that is tailored to their health goals, really focusing on improving resilience and treating the underlying causes of illness, rather than just the symptoms.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back in time, I would definitely choose the same profession. One of my friends told me recently that my job is clearly not just a job to me, it’s a purpose. I fully agree. It’s my purpose and passion, and I wake up every day feeling lucky that I have found my way into this amazing field of naturopathic mental health care.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
One of the most important factors in my success has been reaching out to my mentors and colleagues to discuss challenging cases, share insights, and learn from each other. Having the support of others who have come before me, as well as those who are currently my coworkers and colleagues in the field, has been invaluable in making me the successful doctor that I am today.
