We recently connected with Jeong Hur and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeong thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
As a full-time worker and night-time artist, I find myself immersed in two distinct worlds, each offering unique experiences. My full-time job provides the necessary financial stability to support my life, ensuring a sense of security for my mental well-being. However, while it has its moments of enjoyment, it can also be monotonous at times.
Conversely, my night-time artistic pursuits serve as a therapeutic outlet, allowing me to immerse myself in the creative process and find solace in crafting my creations. This meditative focus helps alleviate the stresses accumulated during the day.
In light of this, I can confidently say that I derive immense happiness from my role as an artist. My earnest desire is for my night-time passion to blossom into a full-time occupation, where I can channel my creativity and find fulfillment in my work every day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, I’m Jeong, originally from Korea, and currently residing in the vibrant city of Brooklyn, New York. I am among the graduates who had to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, which included canceled shows, including my thesis exhibition, and a challenging job market. Despite these obstacles, I am steadfastly pursuing my creative career.
My journey has led me from the realm of graphic design to photography and now to the exciting world of mixed-media sculpture. Although I may not have a concrete explanation for why my artistic medium is shifting, I take pride in the fact that I am always guided by my inner voice. In a world where the boundaries between creative genres are increasingly blurred, I embrace the fluidity of artistic expression and resist confining myself to a specific genre or industry. Instead, I remain open to the boundless possibilities that lie ahead and firmly believe in my abilities to embrace whatever path I choose.
While my career is in its early stages, I am resolute in my commitment to progress steadily and purposefully. Each step I take brings me closer to fulfilling my artistic vision, and I trust that with determination and belief in myself, I will continue moving forward on this remarkable journey.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I don’t have a deep understanding of NFTs but have a clear idea. It essentially serves as receipts for digital images. However, as an artist, I often experience a sense of emptiness when creating digital artwork because it lacks a physical presence and feels confined to the digital realm, like a mere image on a screen. Despite the recent surge in buying NFT images, I couldn’t help but feel skeptical about the value of owning a digital image that you can’t touch or physically possess.
The question remains: Why do people invest in owning ownership of digital images when they lack a tangible form? However, I hold a strong belief that NFTs can find their true potential when they are coupled with physical artwork. By using NFTs as certificates of ownership for physical pieces, they can serve as powerful tools to prove the authenticity of the original work.
I believe that their true transformative power lies in complementing physical artwork. In this context, NFTs become more than just digital collectibles; they become irreplaceable tokens of ownership, deeply linked to the tangible art piece’s history and provenance.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ultimate life goal is quite simple: to find happiness. Though it may seem ambiguous, it remains the core purpose driving my existence. I aspire to embrace happiness in every aspect of life, from living each day joyfully to eventually departing this world with contentment.
While happiness itself may be intangible, I firmly believe that life itself is a journey of discovery. With each passing day, I gain new insights into what happiness means to me. This journey has taught me that happiness comes in various forms, both in small and significant moments. I must admit that recognizing and cherishing the smaller moments of happiness was a challenging lesson for me, one that took time and effort to grasp.
Amidst this quest for happiness, I have found a profound source of joy in my creative endeavors. Each step of my creative journey fills me with immense satisfaction, even when faced with failures. These failures serve as valuable lessons, propelling me towards improvement, while my achievements provide the confidence to take further strides.
In my creative pursuits, I do not seek a specific destination or rigid goals. Instead, I view this journey as an ever-evolving companion, guiding me toward my overarching life goal of happiness. It is through creativity that I explore, experiment, and uncover the essence of what truly brings me joy.
Ultimately, my creative journey is intertwined with my pursuit of happiness, fueling my passion for life and inspiring me to cherish each moment. As I continue this adventure, I eagerly await the wonders it will unfold and the happiness it will bring.
