We recently connected with Nathan Mitchell and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Music has always been a part of my life since I was child. My father is a musician and singer, as well as, my mother is a singer. My family is full of musicans, singer, creatives of all aspects of life. It was destined for me to follow in the same path.
Nathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
How did you get started in music and into the industry?
I started playing in church at the age of 5 years old as a drummer. I caught an interest for the piano and started watching and learning the sounds of the piano from family members and friends only to emulate and mimic what I saw and heard. Eventually the black and whites started making sense and became musical and tolerable to listen too. I eventually shifted from playing drums in church to keyboard. That’s when the world of music really opened up for me. Of course like many aspired musicians I was in different activities in school to help shape my musical journey, however, church is where I flourished. As time progressed I was presented with an opportunity to share my musical gift on stage with 2 premier smooth jazz artist. The show was a great success and was the launching pad for my current contemporary smooth jazz career.
What do you think sets you apart from others?
I think my level of drive to create a legacy for my family is the motivation that sets me apart from others. Many creatives are in the business of entertainment for the sake of money, fame, fortune, etc. I want to create a legacy for my children. I want my name to be something great for them to stand on. I am ever so blessed to be in this position and I am looking forward to more positive impacts as a result of this journey.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think the biggest testament of my resilience to win in this music / life journey is presented through a major loss in my life. My family has conquered some great challenges in our lives. Our greatest conquest was getting over the lost of my wife in 2010 whom passed away of a rare cancer (nasopharyngeal cancer). That was a tough journey but we/I am doing very well. Being a international / national artist has placed me in a position to share the love of life and music with so many people of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I have so many proud moments. The first was the first single that I dropped entitled “Inspiration” that hit national radio and made the top 30 Billboard charts at #20. The next greatest achievements were my 3 consecutive NAACP Image Award Nominations for projects that I self produced. My current greatest moment was seeing my latest single “100% Cotton” score the #1 BILLBOARD spot with an overall presence of 19 weeks on the BILLBOARD charts.
These accomplish came by staying committed and faithful to the vision. I want my fans and followers to learn from my drive and use my story as momentum to be empowered to seize the moment of pursuing there dreams and visions. It’s not too late. You are not to old. You are not limited. You are perfectly capable of accomplishing every goal and dream that has presented itself in your mind. With that being said I want all of my followers and fans to understand that it’s there time to make it happen so simply do it.
