We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Alright, Jennifer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
As an orthopedic nurse practitioner, who has always had a love for health and fitness and helping others with confidence I knew that I wanted to start a practice in aesthetic medicine. Much different than any other medical field I’ve been in, Aesthetics truly is completely different. I knew that starting part time would be difficult and it would be hard to join another practice, so I made the decision to start my own business. It was bold, it was scary, it was expensive, but it was incredible. I made the decision to join a group of powerful ladies in a salon space. This was different than what many others do but I wanted people to feel like they were truly treating themselves when coming in for an aesthetic procedure. As a surgical practitioner, I know that sterility and technique is extremely important, as well as explaining the risks and benefits of each procedure. I took many courses, asked many questions, and shadowed other injectors that I thought had the same ideas that I did.
My advice to anyone wanting to start their own business is that you can’t get back time! You can literally Google anything. So do it. Collaborate with others versus competing with them.
Jennifer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an orthopedic nurse practitioner and have been in the practice doing hip and knee replacements with the same surgeon since 2006. I’ve always had a passion for health and fitness and helping others find confidence in themselves. In 2020 while the world was turning upside down, we were unable to do orthopedic surgeries for several weeks, and I took advantage of that time to learn how to build an aesthetic practice, knowing that it was my true passion. Aesthetics can get a bad name due to social media and Hollywood. My goal has never been to change someone’s facial features, but to help people enhance the features they have, and look well rested. I dove into course after course and opened my own practice. Working part time while still doing orthopedics. I love both and I’m still doing both things.
My goal with my client is to truly listen to their goals, but also be realistic about what can and cannot be achieved. I love educating others on how neurotoxin (Botox), facial fillers, microneedling, etc work in the risks and benefits.
In the last four years, I’ve gone from an extremely small space with only friends as clients to an amazing clientele built from referrals and the ownership of a new space with two other amazing entrepreneurial women.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I truly think that I built my reputation on being genuine! I’ve always loved health and fitness, and had a large social media following where I’ve always shown real life. I show the good, the bad, and the ugly. I don’t show highlight reels only. I also feel like I educate my clients so that they fully understand the benefits and the risks of each procedure. This can be scary for some but it’s also extremely important in aesthetic medicine. It’s a beautiful thing but it’s still a medical treatment.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Treating clients well so that they refer their friends to me! I’m on social media, and I have an amazing website in my opinion, but truly the best clients are the ones that were sent to me by previous clients. If you are honest with people and you treat them well they will spread positivity.
