Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Rae. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Heather, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first time I was ever hired as a singer was for a Christmas ice show in a casino in Michigan. I was so nervous on opening night, I thought I was going to pass out. It was about 10 seconds before I was to go on and I turned to the sound tech and said, “I literally don’t want to be here. I don’t want to do this, I have no idea what I’m doing.”
The poor guy had NO idea what to do and just watched me have a near mental break down while my 10 second warning ticked down to 1. He didn’t say a word and just handed me the mic while gently leading me to the curtain. My legs carried me out to center stage and as soon as I started singing, all my nerves just vanished. I knew in that moment that that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Heather, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Soul Pop singer, songwriter, producer and Nashville recording artist currently based in Phoenix, AZ. My music kinda sounds like a mix of Taylor Swift, Adele and Billie Eilish.
I grew up in North Dakota and started my career as a figure skater, singer and emcee in professional ice shows. Since then, I’ve really pursued songwriting and have released a handful of my own originals.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What drives me the most is the hope that I can encourage someone else in their own journey. Whether it’s standing up for themselves, pushing through a personal battle, or being brave enough to try something new, I would consider my creative journey a success if it positively impacts someone else’s life.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I was playing an acoustic set one afternoon and the last three songs I played all happened to be very encouraging, uplifting songs. It was totally unintentional, I just picked them out of my lineup and decided it was an easy way to end my set.
When I was done, a man came up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me for the songs I had played. He said he wasn’t even sure why he had wandered into the venue, but just went in on a whim and heard my last three songs. He went on to say that his wife had just passed away a week ago and hearing those songs made him feel like he might one day be okay.
We hugged and were both crying by the time we parted ways. It gave me a sense of responsibility after that to always give 100% when I perform, even if there’s only a couple people listening.
