We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kid Clever a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kid, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Full-Time is a tricky phrase to say in the music industry when starting out. As a creator moving through the process, you end up finding ways to stay afloat while putting the work in. So as I have progressed through the industry I have found certain gigs to help pay the bills while still pertaining to the career in someway. Gaining a connection here and there as I navigate the funds. For example, I drive the CEO of a really big entertainment company around on the summers to amphitheaters for him to do check ins. I’m gaining exposure to the work field, while getting paid at the same time.

Kid, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Way way back in 2009, I was already an avid music listener and film digest at that point and felt like I could start brining my own ideas to life. With the help of weed and a big imagination, it came natural. My sophomore year of highschool, I jumped in full fledge and really chased the dream. Starting with small budget mixtapes and independently shot music videos, it led to me going to music buisness school up in Minneapolis, Minnesota at IPR. After a year of school, I was offered to jump on road with Tech N9ne for a leg of tour dates. Since then have been located in Los Angeles working to broaden my connections and gain more traction. It’s been good to me… but now thinking about a new scenery change.

Have you ever had to pivot?
That pivot is happening right now. We are changing a lot in house with the way I am promoting the music and even making the music. I just went through a life changing event that makes me want to really step up to the plate and reevaluate some of the approach. I am adding new additions to my team and building a new structure that will hopefully push everything to where we dream of it to be! Excited to bring this new era to the fans and future fans.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist now ten years I think the most rewarding aspect is the journey. It’s TOUGH… but it’s beautiful. I wouldn’t change a single moment in my life. One day I’ll look back and it’ll be ten times more rewarding than it already is now.
