We were lucky to catch up with Ebony Burks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on to date is the Fox mini television series “Shots Fired” The series depicts a DOJ investigation into a racially-charged police shooting of an unarmed teenager. The series was developed at a time where tensions were high amongst people of color and the police The series was fiction but the inspiration surrounding it stemmed from real incidents such as the death of 12-year old Tamir Rice. Myself, and several other creatives wrote original music to reflect the times for the series.
Ebony, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been writing music for a while. I’ve been blessed to be able to write several different genres. Professionally, I’ve been writing & singing for over 20 yrs. Writing music for Film & TV has been fun & it keeps me busy. I love creating melodies and pulling ideas from everyday life. I have my days where I’m super creative & inspired to write for others. I also have days where I only want to create something for myself. Those are the records I put on streaming services. Lately, I’ve been working on my EP, it’s a mixture of feel good, feel fly, and dancing vibes. I’m excited for everyone to hear it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
At this very moment, the writer’s strike is an example of how us creatives feel we aren’t being supported or appreciated. As a member of the Recording Academy, I am a district advocate for many issues affecting the careers of artists, and songwriters. In 2019, We fought to have the House of Representatives pass the CASE ACT (Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement) This bill passed 410-6 before being signed into law, created a small claims court for copyright cases. This was a huge win for us. We are in an ongoing fight for better protection of artistic expression and fairer compensation for songwriters, performers, and studio professionals. Society can help by writing/emailing their Congressperson and asking them to support creatives, vote in local/state elections, vote for the politicians that support creatives. Stand with us so we can continue to thrive.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Legacy. I want to make sure that I’m adding value to the culture of music. I want my experience to be an example to others. Creating good music, using my gifts, and making people feel good. That’s my goal.
