Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nyia Brina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nyia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I want to be remembered for being the one who never gave up. The one who always strived to do the unthinkable. The risk taker, the dream chaser. I want to be remembered for the good I did and the words I said. I want people to remember my heart and my work. I strive to leave a good mark on people every where I go even if it’s something simple. Now don’t get me wrong you can’t please everybody and every day is not perfect but for the people that I do leave a good mark on, that’s what I want to be remembered by. Living life like every day something magical could happen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am 24 years old and I started doing makeup when I was about 19 years old. It’s only been 3 years since I’ve actually started taking my brand and business serious but I always knew I wanted to do something in the beauty industry. I wanted a way to help women in a sense to make them feel confident, beautiful, sexy, timeless but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do.. My mama was a hairstylist when I was growing up so everyone thought I was going to do hair but I knew that wasn’t what I wanted. I began getting more into makeup when I started club promoting right when I turned 18. I was a baby and everyone else looked so grown in the club and I wanted to look older as well so I started applying makeup. My friends started letting me do makeup on them to and it was like a light bulb went off in my head like God said “This is it”. So I started doing my makeup all the time and posting videos and pictures and got a job at the mall doing makeup and that’s where it all started. Now before that I was serving at different restaurants and I was the one who would always quit a job and just get another but that started to feel like a constant cycle and I was so unhappy. I had to step out on faith and take a risk but it was the best thing I’ve ever done. I try to set myself apart from others in my industry by making myself personable to my clients, relate to them, get to know them. Let them know they are more than just clients to me. In doing that I feel we create more of a friendship and it gives them a safe space to just relax and enjoy the service. I am most proud of the diversity of things I have accomplished. I’ve modeled, I’ve done video shoots, photoshoots, I’ve worked on music video sets, short films, acted in a youtube series, I’ve done bridal makeup for over 20+ women. My accomplishments feel limitless like I can do anything I put my mind to and of course with God beside me and always consulting with him first before anything.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So everyone was affected by covid. It was the craziest thing I had ever seen! Businesses were shutting down, malls were closed, restaurants, and so much more. With me doing makeup it was so scary because I had to be super close to my clients and with this virus spreading I didn’t want to put myself at risk so I was taking a few clients at home but it was mostly family and friends. I didn’t know what was going to happen, when I was able to return to work at the mall something was different. I felt like I had outgrown the space like I had learned so much from the experience that I was ready to expand and I just had to go. I left with nothing but faith, not even a consistent clientele. I just decided I was going to trust God and go with my heart. I left the mall and the next day started working in a hair salon and I began growing my clientele and God just began opening doors left and right, presenting me with opportunities I could have possibly missed out on if i didn’t take the step and just trust him and his plan. Now I have my own suite with a consistent and growing clientele with so much more to experience to add on.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media has been the best tool for my business. I post constantly and consistently. I mean every day I post something from my business whether it’s a flyer, my website, clients, specials, old pics and videos. I always want my timeline to be thinking of me, my clients to think of me. Even if it’s one post or one thing per day. POST! I post even when I don’t feel like it. You never know what can happen. I’ve gotten clients off Tik Tok , Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat. You just never know who’s watching and what they are looking for .
