Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to June Haupts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi June, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
A sense of independence was there from the beginning. My parents had 4 kids within 4 years, so we were left to our own to figure out how to make it in this world. Ever since I can remember, I had my own business. Whether that be a lemonade stand, making and delivering donuts, babysitting, or shoveling snow out of the neighbor’s driveways, we were constantly hustling. My folks were supportive of us creating our own livelihoods, instilling confidence and creating an understanding of practical decision making.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As I grew up and started exploring different fields of study or careers, I knew I wanted to create something from the ground up with my own bare hands. When I was introduced to coffee and coffee carts abroad, I was sold. I couldn’t believe we didn’t have anything like it in the states! I built my first coffee cart and learned a ton along the way and just built my second this past year. In my early twenties I fell in love with coffee while working on a yacht in the Mediterranean. A quick vacation to the capital of Croatia was where I experienced my first “aha” moment for what I wanted to do with my life. The owner of a coffee shop made me a chemex and I was hooked. I loved the ritual of it and how passionate he was about explaining where the coffee was sourced and farmed. This aligned with my intersecting interests, having come from a family of farmers. From that moment on I became the “barista on the boat,” sourcing the best coffee wherever we sailed to. After a while I landed in Santa Barbara at Dune (formerly known as The French Press). I became the store educator for new hires and would teach the public about the various regions we sourced our coffee from.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Besides Roasting and running the carts, another big part of the Welcome business is consulting. I’ve helped most major coffee cart businesses across the country get up and running. I get a lot out of talking to people with the same passions and helping out their honest businesses. I’ve also consulted at large tech companies and restaurants to build out their coffee programs, which has been a fun challenge. Since I built a second cart last year, the business is growing and I’m looking to have a team I can call on to run events simultaneously.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth. Especially in the high end private event industry.
