We were lucky to catch up with Savannah Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Savannah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I have been very blessed with the incredible support system my family has provided for me. I have never been one that could stick with a job for an excessive amount of time. As soon as I start having the negative feelings or just dreading going to work in general I would switch it up and find something new. It wasn’t until a little more experience and age, that I realized, I didn’t like working my life away, making other peoples dreams come true, and not being created for it. I was working the basic Monday – Friday 9-5 that everyone is “raised” thinking that is all there is in life. I wasn’t making my own schedule. I didn’t have lunch longer than 30 minutes, and I was stuck behind a desk all day everyday. I was working towards someone else’s dreams, when I should have been chasing my own. Thankfully, my parents helped me realize that. What did my parents do right? They trusted me, while supporting me, to find my purpose in life, the thing I am passionate about the most.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Savannah, CEO and founder of Shimmers by Sav! I am a bridal | special occasions hair and makeup artist that specializes in a shimmering cut crease! My love for makeup started as a young girl. My mother never left the house without it! I always had a fascination with how you can really let your creativity show through with just a couple pallets! My mom has always been a huge supporter of that! The beauty industry runs through my veins, or naturally if you will. Growing up my mother was a hair dresser. She worked out of our house, having her clients (who became her friends) over at least four times a week. I loved watching my mom! I was basically her little assistant, only without pay! The reactions that her clients had after seeing the transformation she accomplished were so rewarding for me, i could only imagine how my mom felt!
I think that is where my love of all of this stemmed from! Not just the reactions from my clients from the work I just put in, but making friends along the way! I have always been a people person! I can talk to a wall, and I also got that trait from my mother. Being in this industry, in my opinion, has so much more to do with the way you can relate to your clients, than the skills. Every makeup artist has the skill of makeup in common. I mean that’s what makes all of us makeup artists, But the connections you can make, learning someone’s story, while they are sitting in your chair. That is my favorite part!
I have several things to be proud of… one being the confidence i have gained, being able to go out and give someone a look they will love, in just a short amount of time. What I am most proud of, is how the makeup look I create, shows my clients how beautiful they really are, and truly feel it. The way you see how their faces light up for the big reveal says it all! I couldn’t do what I do, without all of my previous clients! And I thank you all a million!
To all of my future clients; I say with complete confidence, that you will be pleased with our ability in helping your big day run smoothly when going with Shimmers by Sav. We will arrive on time, brushes sanitized, and an uplifting attitude just for you! We take pride in not only the work we perform, but the way we carry ourselves and the name we work for. I hope to have you in our chair soon!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of this industry for me, is like I mentioned previously, the relations I have with my clients, and the way I make them feel. Hearing their reactions to seeing my work, and how beautiful they really are, is the reason I do it. Makeup is so fascinating, because you are able to emphasize specific features on a face, and even cover up a blemish. Helping others see how beautiful they are with a nude lip and a pair of lashes, is more than rewarding for me!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Here in the state of Georgia, you do not have to be licensed to perform makeup on others. Though furthering my education from other places than just Youtube is my goal, I am 100% self taught. That was the hardest part when facing my confidence. Am I good enough, only knowing what I know, to become a professional ? The answer is YES! And so are you if that is something you’re interested in!
