Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DJ Mini . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi DJ Mini, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
If I could go back I would have started earlier! Because once I had started there was already a teen DJ who was throwing parties so I had to quickly prove myself and gain the trust of others especially with me being a female DJ! If I started sooner I may have been able to be where the other DJ is at but I’m glad I started when I did because the opportunities I’m getting I never saw myself having if I didn’t launch when I did. So I like where I am right now and it’s only up from here!!
DJ Mini, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tyler Pope, also popularly known as DJ Mini or Mini. I’m 19 and from Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of 14 I got involved in a program called Urban Arts. With this program I was able to expand my love of music through Djing. I was taught marketing skills and the basic concepts of how to tun a business; as well as being mentored by a professional Dj and using the skills I was taught by him and making them my own. As my quote states, “When you’re happy you enjoy the music but when you’re sad you understand the lyrics.” I have the understanding of knowing how to read the crowd and knowing the right move to make. I have a broad knowledge and variety of music for different occasions and age groups. Since I’ve started almost 6 years ago, I am very proud of my growth and the connections I’ve made with others. Through Djing I’ve had so many great experiences with different venues, cities, and special occasions. Djing is my passion and something I can’t imagine myself not doing; but it’s about more than Djing. It’s about people having a good time and going above their expectations for their party or event. Djing is nothing without the people that support you therefore a client’s experience is top priority.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The main factors for growing my clientele has been my age and my marketing skills. At my age, there’s so many possibilities for what I could be doing so in my opinion successfully running my own business sets me apart from others. I was even handed the opportunity to Dj for my high school as an alumni and even memorable events like prom or concerts. But I also remember to do things during events like pass out my business cards, take pictures or live action videos of the event/my Djing, and use have good communication with my clients.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
This isn’t something I had to unlearn but it’s definitely something I came to realized as I grew; but it’s that at the end of the day I come first. Having balance and time to regroup myself plays a big role in my energy and performance. As the CEO and founder of my business, I know that it starts and ends with me therefore my mentality and health come first.
