We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brian Lindgren. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brian below.
Hi Brian, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
With respect to being misunderstood, I have found that the diversity I strive to show in my music has worked against me at times. When I think of albums that I personally consider classics, they all contain range. They contain a range of keys, a range of BPM’s, and a range of emotional content. So, when it came time to write my first album I tried to demonstrate a similar range. I tried to show good times, and bad times, and everything in-between. But when the album was released, many publications mentioned how my album was “hard to categorize” citing the range of moods I presented. I realized that electronic music is often thought of as a genre in itself, and comes with expectations that I wasn’t meeting.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Mux Mool, an american electronic musician. I started producing music on computers in 1998, had my first official release in 2006, and have not stopped releasing since. I have made music that is featured on Adult Swim, and many other tv shows. I’ve done music for video games as well, including doing most of the soundtrack for Nidhogg 2. I’ve also toured the whole world playing my original music to everyone. I write music in moods, very effectively, and I’m deeply proud of that.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist stems from knowing that I took that plunge. I find that so many people resisted pursuing their creativity in lieu of making money. I know we all must make our way and find our way to financial security, but often times, that financial security comes at a loss of creative security. Creative security is a place where your impulses and desires are expressed through your art, and knowing that mine are fully expressed in my music gives me a peace in my heart that money could not provide.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission with regards to making electronic music is to show the world that electronic music is a process and not a genre. Electronic music can be evocative, it can be subtle, and it can excite you beyond measure.
