We were lucky to catch up with Ebony Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ebony , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was an art piece titled Lift Every Voice. This unique pop art was a tribute to the late great Nina Simone and Eartha Kitt. My aim for this piece was to enlighten the youth. I used modern art themes, popular culture and even advertising which are just a few of the many things that have their attention these days.In my attempt to teach my own daughters about legendary Black Women in Old Hollywood, I realized that our youth are so unaware of some amazing women and men in history. I felt compelled to use bold colors, glitter, jewels and even recycled makeup, with the hopes of grasping their attention. This art piece in particular is meaningful to me because it was designed to wake up our youth and teach them the past, the present, and the future are all connected.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, I’m Mrs. Ebony J. Riley. I’m an artist and owner of Delire Art Gallery. Delire Art Gallery is a fun, bold art gallery where I specialize in pop art and textile art. I offer fun never seen before Old Hollywood pop art that will definitely brighten up and room or living space. I am grateful and especially proud of being able to do what brings me personal joy everyday and share it with the world around me. I enjoy bringing iconic black and white photos from our history to life and creating an unique new story that both the young and old can relate to. My potential aim is to grasp the attention of our youth, with hopes of one day being able teach art and history one on one with them in a carefree, creative environment.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect about being an artist is being able to share some of the fun and creative ideas I’ve received from God. I believe becoming an artist was an extremely bold move, it takes courage to openly share my thoughts and creativity with others. As an artist I never can be too certain of how an audience will respond to my art, but I’ve managed to simply release my work only when it feels right in my soul.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission that’s driving my creative journey is to one day help local inner city youth in my community struggling with poverty. I desire to sit one on one with them and teach them creative new skills they can use to earn additional income.
