We were lucky to catch up with Serene Boachie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Serene, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Being an independent artist means that you’re always learning. I’ve gone through multiple chapters in my life where I’ve noticed the growth in myself as an artist. In the beginning, I was simply singing, but there’s so much more to a song than the vocals, so I started to learn production. From there, I explored collaboration, music marketing, and then circled back to singing to recognize my voice as an instrument itself.
Once I realized that I wanted to do music as more than a hobby, I had to recognize how important the business side of music is. Being able to promote yourself and your music requires a completely different mindset than creating the art itself. It’s an interesting balance where, on one hand, I get to be creative with the writing and the musicality of the songs but, on the other hand, I have to be logical and recognize who my audience is, how to reach them, and how to keep their attention.
Because of this, I see music as an ever evolving space to grow, and I appreciate that because I never get bored. I’m constantly taking classes, going to sessions and bootcamps, and learning from those around me so that I can build on my own skillset. I absolutely love it!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Serene, a Pop R&B artist living in Los Angeles. I’m originally from the Dallas area with my family roots from Ghana. I’ve been interested in music from a young age, and I’ve singing for as long as I can remember. Music has always been an emotional outlet for me, and I love that when I listen to songs, I get a snapshot into the artist’s mind for a specific moment in time. Music is connection. I love that it finds ways to bring people together.
Although I have many inspirations, I tend to look within myself when songwriting. I love to challenge myself to practice genres outside of my comfort zone to pick up on elements that I know can enhance the emotions that I’m trying to show in my songs. It’s been an interesting journey with vulnerability because I truly write from my heart.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Share their work! I think when people think of support, their minds go straight to the wallet, and although that is undoubtably helpful, since art is not usually the most lucrative thing in the beginning, it’s not the only way to show support. Getting ears on the music is so important because the more people enjoy, and the more people share, the more the music grows. Whether it’s a share on social media, playing the songs for your friends, or simply word of mouth, everything is helpful to an artist starting out. Knowing that I am supported and that people want to hear what I have to say, is one of the things that, personally, keeps me going.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Definitely the supporters! When I receive messages from people who have felt moved by my music, it’s the most magical feeling. It reassures me that I’m making the right choice in pursuing a career in music. As I said before, music connects, and when someone tells me that they’ve not only listened and enjoyed, but that the words or the melody or the vibe really reached them, it’s so rewarding. I feel grateful.
